L\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement s\u2019est d\u00e9roul\u00e9 en pr\u00e9sence du premier ministre Philippe Couillard, de passage \u00e0 Londres pour prononcer une conf\u00e9rence devant la Chambre de commerce Canada-Royaume-Uni.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019objectif de l\u2019entente consiste \u00e0 cr\u00e9er un consortium international en g\u00e9nomique foresti\u00e8re. Dirig\u00e9 par le professeur John MacKay, grand expert reconnu mondialement qui oeuvre au sein de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Laval, \u00e0 titre de professeur titulaire, et \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 d\u2019Oxford, o\u00f9 il est Wood Professor of Forest Science, les travaux du consortium viseront les grands enjeux scientifiques reli\u00e9s \u00e0 la productivit\u00e9 et \u00e0 la durabilit\u00e9 des for\u00eats, qu\u2019elles soient naturelles ou am\u00e9nag\u00e9es. Les retomb\u00e9es attendues sont la sant\u00e9 des for\u00eats, la cr\u00e9ation de valeur et l\u2019am\u00e9nagement durable. Pour le Qu\u00e9bec et le Canada, il s\u2019agit d\u2019un partenariat majeur sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Je salue cette alliance qui t\u00e9moigne de la capacit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 se maintenir dans la grande soci\u00e9t\u00e9 du savoir. Il s\u2019agit \u00e9galement d\u2019une collaboration significative pour le Qu\u00e9bec puisque l\u2019industrie foresti\u00e8re demeure bien ancr\u00e9e dans notre paysage \u00e9conomique et qu\u2019elle doit aujourd\u2019hui assurer sa comp\u00e9titivit\u00e9 tout en se d\u00e9veloppant de mani\u00e8re durable \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le premier ministre du Qu\u00e9bec, Philippe Couillard.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab C\u2019est un grand jour pour la g\u00e9nomique, et, surtout, pour la reconnaissance de l\u2019excellence de l\u2019expertise qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise \u00bb, a affirm\u00e9 Marc LePage. \u00ab En effet, pouvant compter sur les chercheurs parmi les meilleurs au monde, l\u2019Universit\u00e9 d\u2019Oxford a le privil\u00e8ge de choisir ses collaborateurs. Un tel partenariat avec le Qu\u00e9bec est une cons\u00e9cration de la qualit\u00e9 de la science effectu\u00e9e en sol qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois \u00bb, a ajout\u00e9 le pr\u00e9sident-directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de G\u00e9nome Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n<p>Enjeux \u00e9conomiques de premier ordre, les ressources foresti\u00e8res sont au centre des priorit\u00e9s gouvernementales. La n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de d\u00e9velopper de nouvelles approches, en vue de maximiser la valeur et les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices tir\u00e9s des for\u00eats canadiennes, est devenue une priorit\u00e9. Dans cette perspective, la g\u00e9nomique est un outil extr\u00eamement puissant, qui sert \u00e0 d\u00e9tecter le potentiel des arbres individuels ou des lign\u00e9es d\u2019arbres. Il s\u2019agit de solutions novatrices pour le d\u00e9veloppement durable des for\u00eats. Plusieurs projets sont en cours au Qu\u00e9bec en mati\u00e8re de g\u00e9nomique foresti\u00e8re, dont certains portent plus sp\u00e9cifiquement sur la tordeuse des bourgeons de l\u2019\u00e9pinette, un ravageur identifi\u00e9 par les gouvernements comme une menace s\u00e9rieuse \u00e0 la sant\u00e9 des for\u00eats et \u00e0 l\u2019industrie du bois.<\/p>\n<p>Les collaborations internationales sont au coeur des strat\u00e9gies et des succ\u00e8s de la g\u00e9nomique au Qu\u00e9bec. Nous b\u00e9n\u00e9ficions d\u2019un riche bassin d\u2019expertise, avec des chercheurs qui se d\u00e9marquent gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 leurs comp\u00e9tences uniques appliqu\u00e9es dans des secteurs cl\u00e9s comme la foresterie, mais \u00e9galement la sant\u00e9 personnalis\u00e9e. Nous sommes constamment \u00e0 la recherche de collaborateurs internationaux, en vue de compl\u00e9ter et de rehausser nos champs de comp\u00e9tences. Dans cette perspective, le Royaume-Uni constitue un joueur particuli\u00e8rement important. En effet, deuxi\u00e8me pays apr\u00e8s les \u00c9tats-Unis en g\u00e9nomique, ce pays est \u00e0 la fine pointe dans de nombreux secteurs d\u2019activit\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Outre le secteur forestier, le Qu\u00e9bec quant \u00e0 lui compte plusieurs autres collaborations d\u2019envergure \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle internationale. Citons notamment le professeur Jacques Simard de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Laval, qui dirige un important programme de recherche (13 M$\/4 ans) sur le cancer du sein, en collaboration avec des chercheurs de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Cambridge, qui mettent leur expertise en \u00e9pid\u00e9miologie et en bio-informatique \u00e0 contribution dans la r\u00e9alisation de ce grand projet.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 propos de G\u00e9nome Qu\u00e9bec<\/p>\n<p>Depuis mai 2000, G\u00e9nome Qu\u00e9bec est le ma\u00eetre d\u2019oeuvre du d\u00e9veloppement de la g\u00e9nomique au Qu\u00e9bec. En appuyant pr\u00e8s de 80 projets, 900 chercheurs et en assurant la gestion des op\u00e9rations du Centre d\u2019innovation G\u00e9nome Qu\u00e9bec et Universit\u00e9 McGill, G\u00e9nome Qu\u00e9bec contribue \u00e0 acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer la d\u00e9couverte de nouvelles applications dans des secteurs strat\u00e9giques tels la sant\u00e9 personnalis\u00e9e, la foresterie, l\u2019environnement et l\u2019agroalimentaire.
