Ce g\u00e9nome constitue une pierre angulaire des travaux \u00e0 venir qui am\u00e9lioreront la diversit\u00e9 g\u00e9n\u00e9tique et utiliseront la r\u00e9sistance au stress du tournesol et sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 pousser dans diff\u00e9rents climats. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle mondiale, cette plante ol\u00e9agineuse saine, dont la valeur se chiffre \u00e0 20&nbsp;milliards de dollars, pourrait fort bien s\u2019adapter aux changements climatiques parce qu\u2019elle peut pousser et prosp\u00e9rer dans toutes sortes de conditions environnementales, y compris la s\u00e9cheresse.<\/p>\n<p>Seule grande culture domestiqu\u00e9e en Am\u00e9rique du Nord, le tournesol qui rappelle le soleil et est une source d\u2019inspiration pour les artistes et les photographes, est \u00e0 la fois un symbole social et un sujet d\u2019\u00e9tude important pour les chercheurs. En biologie de l\u2019\u00e9volution, le tournesol est depuis longtemps un mod\u00e8le en recherche sur l\u2019apparition de nouvelles esp\u00e8ces, et en phytologie, il est un mod\u00e8le dans la compr\u00e9hension du captage solaire et de la croissance v\u00e9g\u00e9tale. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Malgr\u00e9 ce grand int\u00e9r\u00eat, l\u2019assemblage du g\u00e9nome du tournesol s\u2019est av\u00e9r\u00e9 extr\u00eamement difficile parce que 70 \u00e0 80&nbsp;% du g\u00e9nome sont constitu\u00e9s de r\u00e9gions qui se r\u00e9p\u00e8tent, complexit\u00e9 qui a confondu les protocoles d\u2019assemblage de pointe pendant tout pr\u00e8s d\u2019une d\u00e9cennie. Le g\u00e9nome du tournesol est \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s 10&nbsp;% <em>plus gros<\/em> que le g\u00e9nome humain. La difficult\u00e9 r\u00e9side toutefois dans le fait que les duplications sont \u00e0 la fois plus longues et plus jeunes (c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire plus semblables les unes aux autres) que dans le g\u00e9nome humain.<\/p>\n<p>La publication du g\u00e9nome du tournesol dans <em>Nature <\/em>suit deux investissements importants dans la g\u00e9nomique du tournesol, totalisant plus de 18&nbsp;millions de dollars, de G\u00e9nome British Columbia (Genome BC), de G\u00e9nome Canada et d\u2019autres bailleurs de fonds en 2009 et en 2015. \u00ab&nbsp;C\u2019est l\u2019un des g\u00e9nomes les plus complexes publi\u00e9s \u00e0 ce jour, dit Loren Rieseberg, Ph.&nbsp;D., professeur au d\u00e9partement de botanique de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-Britannique et l\u2019un des auteurs principaux de l\u2019article. Nous n\u2019avons pas que s\u00e9quenc\u00e9 le g\u00e9nome du tournesol, nous avons \u00e9galement dress\u00e9 les cartes physiques et g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques de sa structure, ce qui accro\u00eet la valeur du g\u00e9nome pour la recherche et la s\u00e9lection.&nbsp;\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab&nbsp;Nous f\u00e9licitons M.&nbsp;Rieseberg et toute l\u2019\u00e9quipe de cette r\u00e9alisation, dit Catalina Lopez-Correa, Ph. D., conseill\u00e8re scientifique en chef et vice-pr\u00e9sidente \u00e0 Genome BC. Notre investissement procurera des avantages importants aux chercheurs universitaires et sectoriels parce que ces donn\u00e9es guideront le d\u00e9veloppement de souches poss\u00e9dant des caract\u00e8res de r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 des sources de stress comme la s\u00e9cheresse et de faibles nutriments, ce qui permettra de les faire pousser dans des sols secs et d\u00e9grad\u00e9s.
