Scott Tanner, un chimiste de Toronto qui travaillait dans le secteur priv\u00e9, a rencontr\u00e9 par hasard un biologiste, M. John Dick, chercheur principal du R\u00e9seau universitaire de la sant\u00e9 de la ville. C\u2019est l\u2019une des nombreuses co\u00efncidences qui ont contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 jeter les bases d\u2019une histoire de r\u00e9ussite canadienne : la formation de DVS Sciences, une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 pionni\u00e8re de biotechnologie de Markham, en Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>Lorsque les deux chercheurs se sont rencontr\u00e9s, M. Tanner \u0153uvrait dans le domaine de la spectrom\u00e9trie de masse atomique, une technologie utilis\u00e9e auparavant seulement pour d\u00e9terminer la composition atomique de la mati\u00e8re \u2013 l\u2019arsenic dans l\u2019eau, par exemple. M. Dick lui a fait comprendre, raconte-t-il, l\u2019importance de l\u2019examen distinct de chacune des cellules en recherche biom\u00e9dicale. La collaboration qui a suivi entre les deux hommes, financ\u00e9e par G\u00e9nome Canada, a men\u00e9 M. Tanner et son \u00e9quipe de chimistes et d\u2019ing\u00e9nieurs \u00e0 inventer un outil r\u00e9volutionnaire : un syst\u00e8me d\u2019analyse prot\u00e9ique qui a g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 les premi\u00e8res images d\u00e9taill\u00e9es du fonctionnement de cellules individuelles, souvent rares, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle mol\u00e9culaire. Le laboratoire de recherche que dirigeait M. Dick a achet\u00e9 le premier instrument fabriqu\u00e9 par M. Tanner et son \u00e9quipe; il y en a aujourd\u2019hui environ 80 partout dans le monde.<\/p>\n<p>M. Tanner explique que, sans la pr\u00e9sence des premiers investisseurs pr\u00eats \u00e0 accepter un certain risque, il ne disposerait pas aujourd\u2019hui d\u2019une technologie commerciale \u00ab susceptible d\u2019acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer prodigieusement la prestation de soins de sant\u00e9 personnalis\u00e9s \u00bb. Le hasard a voulu qu\u2019en 2005, G\u00e9nome Canada lance un concours ax\u00e9 sur le d\u00e9veloppement de nouvelles technologies en g\u00e9nomique pour favoriser \u00ab des approches nouvelles, voire r\u00e9volutionnaires \u00bb. La proposition de M. Tanner a \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u2019une des treize propositions qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 retenues et qui se sont partag\u00e9 au total 9,4 millions de dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Selon M. Naveed Aziz, directeur des programmes de technologie de G\u00e9nome Canada, les chercheurs devaient, \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0, faire la d\u00e9monstration de principe pour que leur proposition soit accept\u00e9e. Dor\u00e9navant, ils seront invit\u00e9s \u00e0 pr\u00e9senter des id\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>En f\u00e9vrier 2014, Fluidigm de Californie a fait l\u2019acquisition de DVS Sciences pour la somme de 207,5 millions de dollars. Cette acquisition est une solution gagnante \u00e0 la fois pour Fluidigm et le Canada, car la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 continuera d\u2019employer 64 personnes \u00e0 temps plein dans la R-D et la fabrication d\u2019instruments \u00e0 Markham. L\u2019installation prend de l\u2019expansion en raison de la demande pour ses produits.<\/p>\n<p>M.
