Un test g\u00e9nomique automatis\u00e9, mis au point par une \u00e9quipe de chercheurs de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de l\u2019Alberta, pourrait toutefois transformer la fa\u00e7on dont les producteurs alimentaires d\u00e9tectent les bact\u00e9ries\u00a0<em>E. coli<\/em>\u00a0et d\u2019autres et s\u2019assurent que la viande est propre \u00e0 la consommation avant qu\u2019elle ne quitte l\u2019usine de transformation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Les inspections ne font en fait que d\u00e9terminer si les soci\u00e9t\u00e9s suivent les r\u00e8glements de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire \u00bb, dit l\u2019oncologue exp\u00e9rimentale, DreLinda Pilarski, qui dirige ce projet avec la microbiologiste Lynn McMullen. Nous devons disposer d\u2019une bonne technologie pour d\u00e9terminer la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019agents pathog\u00e8nes. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>La plateforme cr\u00e9\u00e9e par les coll\u00e8gues de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de l\u2019Alberta consiste essentiellement en une \u00ab photocopieuse mol\u00e9culaire \u00bb, dit Dre\u00a0Pilarski. Un technologue qui n\u2019a pas besoin d\u2019une formation sp\u00e9ciale peut placer les bact\u00e9ries d\u2019un \u00e9chantillon de viande dans une cassette de la taille d\u2019un timbre-poste, mettre celle-ci \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur d\u2019un appareil de la grosseur d\u2019une bo\u00eete \u00e0 chaussures et appuyer sur un bouton. Moins de huit heures plus tard, comparativement \u00e0 un ou deux jours actuellement, le technologue saura si la bact\u00e9rie\u00a0<em>E. coli<\/em>, source de maladie, est pr\u00e9sente. De plus, il en co\u00fbtera moins de 50 cents par \u00e9chantillon pour un \u00e9ventail complet de tests.<\/p>\n<p>Le troisi\u00e8me membre de l\u2019\u00e9quipe de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 d\u2019Alberta est M. Patrick Pilarski, sp\u00e9cialiste en instrumentation biom\u00e9dicale qui a dirig\u00e9 la mise au point de l\u2019interface logicielle du syst\u00e8me. \u00ab Ce test peut \u00eatre tr\u00e8s largement d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 et il est tr\u00e8s simple, dit-il, parce que le syst\u00e8me comporte une analyse automatis\u00e9e des donn\u00e9es d\u00e9taill\u00e9es du test. Il les r\u00e9sume \u00e0 une d\u00e9cision \u201coui\u201d ou \u201cnon\u201d pour l\u2019utilisateur, m\u00eame si le traitement interne des donn\u00e9es est tr\u00e8s complexe. \u00bb Ce diagnostic aidera les producteurs alimentaires \u00e0 assurer le contr\u00f4le de la qualit\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re \u00e9conomique. \u00ab L\u2019industrie n\u2019arr\u00eate pas de nous dire qu\u2019elle veut une r\u00e9ponse dans le m\u00eame quart de travail, dit M. McMullen. Chaque fois qu\u2019une entreprise retient un produit et attend des r\u00e9sultats, ce produit lui co\u00fbte de l\u2019argent. Ce nouveau test donne aux producteurs un moyen tr\u00e8s rapide, peu co\u00fbteux et exact de d\u00e9terminer si les produits alimentaires sont pr\u00eats pour l\u2019exp\u00e9dition \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00eame si la bact\u00e9rie\u00a0<em>E. coli<\/em>\u00a0est actuellement vis\u00e9e, la plateforme sera adapt\u00e9e pour d\u00e9celer les agents pathog\u00e8nes tels que la Salmonella, la Listeria et le Campylobacter, et elle pourrait m\u00eame \u00eatre utilis\u00e9e pour pr\u00e9server la qualit\u00e9 de l\u2019eau dans les pays en d\u00e9veloppement. \u00ab Cette technologie est extr\u00eamement souple et peut \u00eatre adapt\u00e9e \u00e0 n\u2019importe quelle situation pour laquelle un test mol\u00e9culaire est n\u00e9cessaire, dit Dre Pilarski, dont les recherches initiales ont port\u00e9 sur des applications servant \u00e0 v\u00e9rifier certains types de cancer et d\u2019infections transmises sexuellement.
