Malgr\u00e9 une tradition longue et viable d\u2019exploitation du bois, les changements climatiques font na\u00eetre de graves pr\u00e9occupations : la sant\u00e9 des populations d\u2019arbres adapt\u00e9s aux climats ant\u00e9rieurs de leurs r\u00e9gions d\u00e9cline, ce qui rend les arbres plus vuln\u00e9rables aux insectes et aux maladies.<\/p>\n<p>Les menaces pesant sur la valeur \u00e9cologique, \u00e9conomique et r\u00e9cr\u00e9ative des for\u00eats ont \u00e9t\u00e9 les catalyseurs du projet AdapTree, lanc\u00e9 en 2011. AdapTree est financ\u00e9 par G\u00e9nome Canada et Genome British Columbia, de m\u00eame que par les gouvernements de la Colombie-Britannique et de l\u2019Alberta. Des chercheurs utilisent des technologies g\u00e9nomiques de pointe, l\u2019analyse g\u00e9ospatiale et la mod\u00e9lisation climatique pour s\u00e9quencer des semis et d\u00e9terminer quels g\u00e8nes aident les arbres \u00e0 s\u2019adapter aux conditions climatiques locales et quels arbres devraient \u00eatre plant\u00e9s dans telle ou telle r\u00e9gion au cours des ann\u00e9es d\u2019incertitude qui nous attendent.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Nous voulons adopter de nouvelles fa\u00e7ons de faire sur le terrain, dit M<sup>me<\/sup>\u00a0Sally Aitken, Ph. D., l\u2019une des responsables du projet et directrice du Centre for Forest Conservation Genetics \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-Britannique. Nous tentons d\u2019apparier les arbres et les nouveaux climats, une cible mobile. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Les g\u00e9nomes des arbres sont sept fois plus consid\u00e9rables que les g\u00e9nomes humains, ce qui rend cette recherche tout particuli\u00e8rement complexe. En analysant toutefois les variations g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques de l\u2019ADN du pin tordu latifoli\u00e9 et d\u2019\u00e9pinettes de plus de 250 populations pour comprendre comment ils se sont adapt\u00e9s \u00e0 la chaleur, au froid et \u00e0 la s\u00e9cheresse, M<sup>me<\/sup>\u00a0Aitken et ses coll\u00e8gues ont identifi\u00e9 des candidats solides \u00e0 la \u00ab migration assist\u00e9e \u00bb sans pour autant sacrifier la diversit\u00e9 g\u00e9n\u00e9tique. Les chercheurs proc\u00e8dent maintenant aux analyses finales des donn\u00e9es pour confirmer leurs observations avant de recommander aux gouvernements provinciaux des politiques en mati\u00e8re de plantations.<\/p>\n<p>La recherche en foresterie consiste g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement \u00e0 planter des semis de populations diff\u00e9rentes dans plusieurs zones et \u00e0 attendre une d\u00e9cennie ou deux pour voir les r\u00e9sultats. La g\u00e9nomique, selon M<sup>me<\/sup>\u00a0Aitken, offre \u00ab une image beaucoup plus nuanc\u00e9e de la dynamique de l\u2019adaptation des arbres, beaucoup plus rapidement que les m\u00e9thodes traditionnelles \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Le coresponsable d\u2019AdapTree, Andreas Hamann, qui \u00e9tudie la g\u00e9nomique du paysage \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de l\u2019Alberta, un amalgame de la g\u00e9n\u00e9tique des populations et de l\u2019\u00e9cologie des paysages, donne une perspective spatiale au projet. Ses mod\u00e8les de cartes thermiques, qui portent sur la \u00ab v\u00e9locit\u00e9 des changements climatiques \u00bb, aideront les planteurs \u00e0 suivre le rythme du r\u00e9chauffement mondial au cours des quelques prochaines d\u00e9cennies. \u00ab Il est beaucoup plus productif de proc\u00e9der ainsi qu\u2019am\u00e9nager nos for\u00eats comme si le climat \u00e9tait toujours celui des ann\u00e9es 1970, dit M.
