Cependant, pr\u00e8s du quart des aliments servis sont pratiquement gaspill\u00e9s, puisque les animaux ne poss\u00e8dent pas les enzymes leur permettant de les dig\u00e9rer. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle mondiale, le march\u00e9 des enzymes destin\u00e9es aux animaux repr\u00e9sente 800 millions de dollars annuellement, et on s\u2019attend \u00e0 ce qu\u2019il connaisse une croissance constante pouvant atteindre de 7 \u00e0 8 % par ann\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Elanco, une entreprise mondiale de premier plan dans le domaine de la sant\u00e9 animale fond\u00e9e il y a 60 ans, s\u2019allie \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Concordia dans le cadre de la premi\u00e8re collaboration canadienne \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle de son histoire en mati\u00e8re de d\u00e9veloppement de produits afin d\u2019offrir de nouvelles associations d\u2019enzymes aux producteurs de porcs et de volaille. L\u2019objectif du projet est de formuler des produits commerciaux destin\u00e9s au march\u00e9 diversifi\u00e9 des aliments pour animaux au Canada. Ces produits devraient permettre d\u2019am\u00e9liorer consid\u00e9rablement l\u2019indice de consommation et donc d\u2019accro\u00eetre la marge de profit des producteurs. La premi\u00e8re \u00e9tape du projet consistera \u00e0 identifier les enzymes exclusives favorisant la digestibilit\u00e9 des diff\u00e9rents ingr\u00e9dients couramment retrouv\u00e9s dans les aliments pour les porcs et la volaille au Canada.<\/p>\n<p>S\u2019il est couronn\u00e9 de succ\u00e8s, le projet profitera \u00e0 l\u2019entreprise, \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9 et au pays tout entier. Elanco s\u2019est engag\u00e9e \u00e0 investir dans cet excitant domaine de la recherche et du d\u00e9veloppement afin d\u2019accro\u00eetre les profits de ses clients et d\u2019assurer un bon rendement de ses investissements en recherche. L\u2019Universit\u00e9 Concordia recevrait des redevances et pourrait poursuivre son partenariat avec Elanco dans le but de mettre au point une technologie d\u00e9riv\u00e9e de la g\u00e9nomique au b\u00e9n\u00e9fice de l\u2019agriculture canadienne. Il serait ainsi possible de r\u00e9duire les co\u00fbts de production au Canada, d\u2019am\u00e9liorer la position concurrentielle des producteurs de porcs et de volaille sur le march\u00e9 international, d\u2019offrir de la viande et des \u0153ufs \u00e0 des prix plus concurrentiels pour la consommation int\u00e9rieure, d\u2019accro\u00eetre l\u2019utilisation de c\u00e9r\u00e9ales canadiennes (comme le canola) dans la production d\u2019aliments pour animaux, de r\u00e9duire l\u2019utilisation des terres pour produire les aliments pour animaux et de former du personnel hautement qualifi\u00e9.
