Les infections sont la cause principale de maladie et de d\u00e9c\u00e8s du b\u00e9tail. Elles engendrent des pertes \u00e9conomiques directes pour les producteurs, de m\u00eame que des pertes encore plus graves lorsqu\u2019elles donnent lieu \u00e0 des restrictions du commerce international (comme on l\u2019a vu pour la maladie de la vache folle) et \u00e0 une diminution de la confiance du public \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de la qualit\u00e9 des aliments. Les maladies infectieuses pr\u00e9sentent \u00e9galement des risques pour la sant\u00e9 humaine, si ces maladies sont transmises aux humains. La vaccination est le moyen le plus efficace de pr\u00e9venir les maladies infectieuses chez les animaux, par exemple le b\u00e9tail. Le manque de vaccins efficaces contre certaines maladies contribue \u00e0 la surutilisation des antibiotiques et \u00e0 la strat\u00e9gie d\u2019abattage des animaux infect\u00e9s, ce qui retient de plus en plus l\u2019attention du public.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Potter de VIDO-\u00adInterVac, de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Saskatchewan, et Robert Hancock de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-\u00adBritannique dirigent une \u00e9quipe qui utilise la \u00ab vaccinologie inverse \u00bb pour pr\u00e9venir les maladies infectieuses du b\u00e9tail. Cette approche recourt \u00e0 la technologie g\u00e9nomique pour pr\u00e9s\u00e9lectionner simultan\u00e9ment de grands nombres de prot\u00e9ines bact\u00e9riennes et identifier celles dont les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s sont susceptibles de stimuler une r\u00e9ponse immunitaire protectrice dans le b\u00e9tail. Ces prot\u00e9ines deviennent ensuite la base de la mise au point de nouveaux vaccins et de l\u2019\u00e9laboration de nouvelles strat\u00e9gies d\u2019immunisation. L\u2019\u00e9quipe se concentrera sur deux maladies courantes du b\u00e9tail, soit la tuberculose bovine, une maladie d\u00e9bilitante qui peut \u00eatre transmise aux humains et \u00e0 d\u2019autres animaux domestiques et sauvages, et la paratuberculose, une maladie gastro\u00adintestinale. Elle d\u00e9veloppera et commercialisera des vaccins pour ces maladies co\u00fbteuses dans les deux ans qui suivront la fin du projet. L\u2019\u00e9quipe \u00e9laborera \u00e9galement des tests diagnostiques connexes pour diff\u00e9rencier les animaux vaccin\u00e9s des animaux infect\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Les travaux de l\u2019\u00e9quipe m\u00e8neront un jour \u00e0 une meilleure productivit\u00e9 et rentabilit\u00e9 pour les \u00e9leveurs de b\u00e9tail et accro\u00eetront la confiance du public en r\u00e9duisant le recours \u00e0 l\u2019abattage ou aux antibiotiques pour lutter contre les infections. La r\u00e9putation d\u2019important producteur agroalimentaire du Canada s\u2019en trouvera \u00e9galement am\u00e9lior\u00e9e.
