Un partenariat de recherche entre la Chaire de recherche du Canada en g\u00e9nomique foresti\u00e8re de l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 Laval et FPInnovations, le plus important institut priv\u00e9 de recherche foresti\u00e8re sans but lucratif au monde, auquel participe \u00e9galement le Centre canadien sur la fibre de bois et divers utilisateurs du secteur forestier, a pour objectif d&rsquo;utiliser les plus r\u00e9centes d\u00e9couvertes en g\u00e9nomique pour am\u00e9liorer les arbres et aider ainsi l&rsquo;industrie canadienne \u00e0 devenir plus concurrentielle \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9chelle internationale. Plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment, le partenariat vise \u00e0 mettre au point des \u00e9pinettes qui pousseront plus rapidement, qui produiront un bois de meilleure qualit\u00e9 et qui seront plus r\u00e9sistantes aux insectes nuisibles.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;\u00e9pinette est l&rsquo;esp\u00e8ce la plus utilis\u00e9e pour le reboisement au Canada, quelque 400 millions de semis d&rsquo;\u00e9pinette \u00e9tant plant\u00e9s chaque ann\u00e9e, soit environ 60 % de tous les arbres plant\u00e9s. Avec les techniques habituelles d&rsquo;am\u00e9lioration des arbres, on peut attendre plus de 30 ans avant d&rsquo;obtenir du mat\u00e9riel de reproduction de qualit\u00e9 sup\u00e9rieure. En utilisant la g\u00e9nomique pour s\u00e9lectionner les meilleurs sp\u00e9cimens, l&rsquo;attente pourrait se trouver consid\u00e9rablement r\u00e9duite. Apr\u00e8s avoir associ\u00e9 le profil g\u00e9nomique des arbres \u00e0 leurs attributs, on peut rapidement \u00e9valuer la valeur d&rsquo;un arbre \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9tape m\u00eame du semis, r\u00e9duisant ainsi le besoin d&rsquo;analyses co\u00fbteuses sur le terrain pendant de longues p\u00e9riodes. Les arbres am\u00e9lior\u00e9s pourraient donc \u00eatre plant\u00e9s beaucoup plus rapidement, et la valeur des \u00e9pinettes pourrait augmenter de jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 20 % au fil du temps, soit de 300 millions de dollars par ann\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Ce projet vise \u00e0 exploiter les connaissances tir\u00e9es des pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes recherches financ\u00e9es par G\u00e9nome Canada afin d&rsquo;acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer les applications des tests de s\u00e9lection g\u00e9nomiques intitul\u00e9s FastTRAC, et d&rsquo;adapter les for\u00eats canadiennes afin qu&rsquo;elles r\u00e9pondent aux nouveaux besoins du march\u00e9 et qu&rsquo;elles soient \u00e0 la hauteur des d\u00e9fis environnementaux. Plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment, les nouveaux outils de s\u00e9lection et de profilage g\u00e9nomique seront mis \u00e0 profit aupr\u00e8s du mat\u00e9riel de reproduction des \u00e9pinettes blanches et des \u00e9pinettes de Norv\u00e8ge de trois importants utilisateurs du secteur forestier : le minist\u00e8re des For\u00eats, de la Faune et des Parcs du Qu\u00e9bec, J. D. Irving Limited et le Conseil sur l\u2019am\u00e9lioration des arbres du Nouveau\u2010Brunswick.
