Ses graines sont une importante source de prot\u00e9ines et d&rsquo;huile destin\u00e9es \u00e0 la consommation humaine et animale. Le soya n&rsquo;a pas besoin de fertilisation chimique pour lui fournir de l&rsquo;azote, puisqu&rsquo;il extrait directement cet \u00e9l\u00e9ment de l&rsquo;air avec l&rsquo;aide des bact\u00e9ries pr\u00e9sentes dans le sol, ce qui en fait une plante \u00e9cologique. Toutefois, le d\u00e9veloppement de vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de soya \u00e0 haut rendement convenant aux conditions canadiennes pose certains d\u00e9fis. Premi\u00e8rement, les plants doivent atteindre rapidement la maturit\u00e9, puisque l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 canadien est court; deuxi\u00e8mement, il faut les rendre plus r\u00e9sistants aux ravageurs et aux maladies afin de pr\u00e9venir les pertes et le recours aux pesticides; et, troisi\u00e8mement, puisqu&rsquo;il s&rsquo;agit d&rsquo;une nouvelle culture dans de nombreuses r\u00e9gions du Canada, il faut surmonter certains obstacles qui freinent son adoption.<\/p>\n<p>Avec leur \u00e9quipe, les chercheurs Fran\u00e7ois Belzile et Richard B\u00e9langer, de l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 Laval, examineront en d\u00e9tail le code g\u00e9n\u00e9tique du soya dans le but d&rsquo;identifier les marqueurs d&rsquo;ADN qui contr\u00f4lent des aspects cl\u00e9s de la croissance de la plante, comme la maturit\u00e9 et la r\u00e9sistance aux maladies et aux ravageurs. Les s\u00e9lectionneurs pourront ensuite utiliser ces marqueurs pour d\u00e9velopper des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de soya am\u00e9lior\u00e9es bien adapt\u00e9es aux conditions canadiennes. L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe pourra \u00e9galement produire des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de soya r\u00e9sistant \u00e0 certains parasites et \u00e0 certaines maladies. Les chercheurs m\u00e8neront dans le m\u00eame temps une recherche visant \u00e0 maximiser le potentiel de croissance de l&rsquo;industrie du soya au Canada afin d&rsquo;acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer l&rsquo;adoption de cette culture dans l&rsquo;ouest du pays.
