La s\u00e9cheresse, les inondations, le sel et des nutriments peu abondants nuisent \u00e0 la croissance des plantes et r\u00e9duisent la productivit\u00e9 des cultures. Ces agents de stress environnementaux ont surtout beaucoup d\u2019effet sur nos cultures domestiqu\u00e9es hautement adapt\u00e9es alors que leurs parents \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat sauvage ont d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 des m\u00e9canismes qui les aident \u00e0 surmonter ces difficult\u00e9s. La compr\u00e9hension de ces m\u00e9canismes permettra d\u2019implanter des cultures dans des habitats auparavant inhospitaliers et malgr\u00e9 les conditions climatiques changeantes, ce qui contribuera \u00e0 nourrir une population mondiale en croissance rapide. Les tournesols sont des sujets id\u00e9aux pour ce projet, car ils sont limit\u00e9s par les agents de stress environnementaux, mais ils ont des parents sauvages adapt\u00e9s \u00e0 divers environnements extr\u00eames.<\/p>\n<p>Loren H. Rieseberg de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-Britannique et John Burke de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de G\u00e9orgie dirigent une \u00e9quipe internationale qui examine les raisons pour lesquelles les plantes sauvages r\u00e9sistent mieux aux agents de stress environnementaux. L\u2019\u00e9quipe se concentre sur le tournesol, une culture d\u2019une valeur de 20 milliards de dollars et le seul ol\u00e9agineux inscrit sur la liste du Global Crop Diversity Trust des 25 cultures prioritaires pour la sant\u00e9 alimentaire parce qu\u2019il pousse abondamment dans les pays en d\u00e9veloppement. L\u2019\u00e9quipe de projet d\u00e9terminera et caract\u00e9risera enti\u00e8rement le fondement g\u00e9n\u00e9tique de la r\u00e9sistance au stress des tournesols et cr\u00e9era des ressources qui permettront aux partenaires des secteurs public et priv\u00e9 de s\u00e9lectionner avec efficacit\u00e9 des cultivars \u00e0 haut rendement qui r\u00e9sistent au stress. L\u2019\u00e9quipe \u00e9laborera \u00e9galement des mod\u00e8les de pr\u00e9diction des rendements probables des nouveaux cultivars dans diff\u00e9rents sols et diverses conditions climatiques au Canada. Ils \u00e9laboreront en outre des strat\u00e9gies pour surmonter les obstacles \u00e0 la R-D caus\u00e9s par des trait\u00e9s internationaux sur l\u2019utilisation des ressources g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques v\u00e9g\u00e9tales, ce qui assurera l\u2019utilisation maximale du nouveau mat\u00e9riel v\u00e9g\u00e9tal mis au point dans le cadre de ce projet pour les producteurs canadiens et d\u2019ailleurs dans le monde.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019augmentation de la production de tournesols, obtenue gr\u00e2ce aux nouveaux cultivars au Canada, devrait donner un rendement de quelque 12 millions de dollars US par ann\u00e9e dans les cinq ans qui suivront la fin du projet et atteindre jusqu\u2019\u00e0 230 millions de dollars US annuellement apr\u00e8s dix ans. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle mondiale, les r\u00e9percussions seront consid\u00e9rables, car aucun autre ol\u00e9agineux ne peut maintenir des rendements stables dans un \u00e9ventail de conditions environnementales aussi large, ce que les nouveaux cultivars de tournesol pourront faire selon les pr\u00e9visions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Il n\u2019est pas facile d\u2019\u00eatre une plante.
