On cultive la vigne pour ses fruits dont on produit le raisin de table, le jus de raisin, et les raisins secs. Le raisin sert \u00e9galement \u00e0 la fabrication du vin et de produits spiritueux \u00e0 forte valeur ajout\u00e9e. La vigne est importante en Espagne qui la cultive sur plus de 1,2 million d&rsquo;hectares, soit environ 1\/7 de l&rsquo;ensemble des vignobles du monde principalement ax\u00e9s sur la production de vin. L&rsquo;Espagne, qui compte en outre plus de 50 000 hectares de cultures du raisin de table, est le deuxi\u00e8me producteur en importance en Europe, apr\u00e8s l&rsquo;Italie, et la majeure partie de sa production est destin\u00e9e \u00e0 l&rsquo;exportation.<\/p>\n<p>Le Canada est le plus jeune producteur de vin dans le monde. L&rsquo;industrie viticole canadienne s&rsquo;est toutefois rapidement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e au cours des dix derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es et on compte actuellement au pays 7 000 hectares de vignobles. Cette industrie rapporte beaucoup aux \u00e9conomies des provinces productrices, principalement l&rsquo;Ontario et la Colombie\u00adBritannique, en termes de ventes et de recettes touristiques.<\/p>\n<p>La compl\u00e9mentarit\u00e9 des domaines d&rsquo;expertise du Canada et de l&rsquo;Espagne facilitera les applications novatrices des technologies de la g\u00e9nomique qui contribueront \u00e0 r\u00e9soudre les probl\u00e8mes auxquels font face les industries du raisin et du vin et, en bout de ligne, favoriseront le transfert de connaissances entre l&rsquo;Espagne et le Canada, de m\u00eame qu&rsquo;entre le secteur public et le secteur priv\u00e9. Selon M. Lund, \u00ab\u00a0la g\u00e9nomique appliqu\u00e9e \u00e0 la vigne en est encore \u00e0 ses balbutiements, et les possibilit\u00e9s de grandes d\u00e9couvertes b\u00e9n\u00e9fiques sont fort nombreuses.<\/p>\n<p>Quand nous comprendrons comment les g\u00e8nes r\u00e9gulent le m\u00fbrissement des fruits dans divers environnements de culture, nous disposerons de nouvelles donn\u00e9es qui aideront les viticulteurs \u00e0 perfectionner la gestion des vignobles et \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper de nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s par des programmes de s\u00e9lection qui mettront \u00e0 profit la variation naturelle inh\u00e9rente \u00e0 l&rsquo;esp\u00e8ce Vitis.
