Comme ces cancers touchent souvent de jeunes femmes et des enfants, un grand nombre des patients re\u00e7oivent des traitements tr\u00e8s vigoureux pour am\u00e9liorer leurs chances de survie. Ces traitements ont souvent de graves effets ind\u00e9sirables et ne parviennent pas \u00e0 vaincre les formes les plus malignes de ces cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Selon M<sup>me <\/sup>Cynthia Guidos, chercheure principale \u00e0 l\u2019Institut de recherche de l\u2019H\u00f4pital pour enfants malades de Toronto et professeur d\u2019immunologie \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Toronto, les traitements peuvent \u00e9chouer si la th\u00e9rapie ne cible pas les cellules souches rares du cancer qui peuvent relancer la croissance de la tumeur et jouer ainsi le r\u00f4le de \u00ab racines \u00bb de cette derni\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Les recherches de M<sup>me<\/sup> Guidos sont ax\u00e9es sur le d\u00e9veloppement des cellules normales et des cellules immunitaires malignes. Elle est directrice du projet Identification des voies g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques qui r\u00e9gulent la survie et le d\u00e9veloppement du cancer et des cellules souches du cancer. Son \u00e9quipe comprend des experts de la leuc\u00e9mie, du cancer du sein, des tumeurs c\u00e9r\u00e9brales et des cellules souches du cancer. L\u2019\u00e9quipe \u00e9tudiera des tumeurs chez les humains et des mod\u00e8les de cancer chez la souris pour r\u00e9pondre aux deux questions cruciales suivantes : quelles alt\u00e9rations g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques distinguent les tumeurs tr\u00e8s malignes des tumeurs plus b\u00e9nignes et quels dysfonctionnements g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques et biologiques m\u00e8nent au d\u00e9veloppement de cellules souches canc\u00e9reuses.<\/p>\n<p>En diss\u00e9quant les signaux cellulaires qui r\u00e9gissent la survie anormale des cellules tumorales et des cellules souches canc\u00e9reuses, l\u2019\u00e9quipe du projet devrait mettre au point de nouveaux \u00ab biomarqueurs \u00bb qui peuvent aider \u00e0 r\u00e9server les traitements contre le cancer les plus \u00e9nergiques aux patients chez qui les risques de ne pas r\u00e9agir aux th\u00e9rapies traditionnelles sont les plus \u00e9lev\u00e9s. En bout de ligne, le projet pourrait mener \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9laboration de th\u00e9rapies nouvelles et plus efficaces qui cibleront sp\u00e9cifiquement les cellules souches canc\u00e9reuses. L\u2019\u00e9quipe esp\u00e8re que ses recherches accro\u00eetront \u00e9ventuellement les taux de survie et am\u00e9lioreront la qualit\u00e9 de vie des survivants du cancer du sein, de la leuc\u00e9mie et des tumeurs c\u00e9r\u00e9brales.<\/p>\n<p>(En anglais seulement.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Integrated GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS Research<\/strong>: n\/a<br \/>\n<strong>GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS Project Leaders<\/strong>: n\/a<br \/>\n<u>Summary<\/u><br \/>\nAlthough no specific GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS project has been outlined as part of this Cancer Stem Cell project, the long-term outcomes of the project\u2019s scientific research may have the potential to alter diagnosis and management of cancer, with important ramifications for both pediatric and adult cancer patients and their families. Thus, it is important to have an ongoing GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS component to this project.
