Pourtant, les for\u00eats du Canada sont continuellement menac\u00e9es par les pullulations de ravageurs, les agents pathog\u00e8nes fongiques, les insectes exotiques et les esp\u00e8ces envahissantes. Au lancement du projet, en 2002, on r\u00e9coltait du bois d&rsquo;industrie sur environ un million d\u2019hectares au Canada, mais 18,2 millions d\u2019hectares \u00e9taient ravag\u00e9s par les insectes ou tu\u00e9s par les col\u00e9opt\u00e8res.<\/p>\n<p>Le projet visait principalement \u00e0 accro\u00eetre les avantages \u00e9conomiques \u00e0 long terme et la p\u00e9rennit\u00e9 des for\u00eats canadiennes par la mise au point de ressources en g\u00e9nomique et en prot\u00e9omique pour deux groupes d\u2019esp\u00e8ces d\u2019arbres forestiers : l\u2019\u00e9pinette et le peuplier. Les collaborations soutenues avec les g\u00e9n\u00e9ticiens forestiers du minist\u00e8re des For\u00eats de la Colombie-Britannique, partenaire non universitaire \u00e0 long terme important du projet et leader du principal organisme d\u2019intendance foresti\u00e8re en Colombie-Britannique, font partie des avantages qui d\u00e9coulent d\u00e9j\u00e0 du projet.<\/p>\n<p>Le projet a port\u00e9 sur deux domaines essentiels \u00e0 l\u2019avenir de l\u2019industrie foresti\u00e8re canadienne : la sant\u00e9 des for\u00eats (r\u00e9sistance aux ravageurs et aux maladies), ainsi que la formation et la qualit\u00e9 du bois. L\u2019\u00e9quipe a identifi\u00e9 des g\u00e8nes candidats susceptibles d\u2019offrir une r\u00e9sistance aux ravageurs ou dont les fonctions de r\u00e9sistance aux ravageurs viennent d\u2019\u00eatre reconnues dans certaines essences d\u2019arbre, et d&rsquo;\u00eatre utiles pour la formation du bois.<\/p>\n<p>Le projet a fourni de nouvelles donn\u00e9es importantes sur la g\u00e9nomique de l\u2019interaction \u00e9pinette-ravageurs et la g\u00e9nomique des marqueurs des conif\u00e8res utiles pour les programmes d\u2019am\u00e9lioration de l\u2019\u00e9pinette au minist\u00e8re des For\u00eats de la Colombie-Britannique. La recherche sur les interactions \u00e9pinette-charan\u00e7on a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 d\u00e9finir les caract\u00e9ristiques de d\u00e9fense et de r\u00e9sistance de l\u2019\u00e9pinette de Sitka au charan\u00e7on du pin blanc, connaissances qui serviront \u00e0 \u00e9laborer des recommandations pour le d\u00e9ploiement d\u2019essences r\u00e9sistantes pour la plantation d\u2019\u00e9pinettes de Sitka.
