En Saskatchewan seulement, les dommages caus\u00e9s aux cultures par le gel en 2003-2004 ont atteint le demi- milliard de dollars. Le secteur en expansion rapide de la g\u00e9nomique fonctionnelle offre des possibilit\u00e9s importantes de comprendre et de manipuler des syst\u00e8mes g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques complexes, ce qui permettra en bout de ligne d\u2019am\u00e9liorer la tol\u00e9rance des cultivars aux faibles temp\u00e9ratures.<\/p>\n<p>Dans le cadre de notre projet, nous avons fait appel aux comp\u00e9tences des meilleurs chercheurs sur le stress abiotique des v\u00e9g\u00e9taux au Canada qui ont utilis\u00e9 diverses technologies de la g\u00e9nomique et de la prot\u00e9omique pour comprendre les m\u00e9canismes g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques et biochimiques complexes qui sous-tendent les r\u00e9actions des plantes \u00e0 divers stress abiotiques dont les temp\u00e9ratures extr\u00eames et les conditions d\u00e9favorables des nutriments du sol. Le projet a \u00e9t\u00e9 ax\u00e9 sur le bl\u00e9 et le canola \u2013 deux cultures d\u2019une importance capitale dans l\u2019agriculture canadienne.<\/p>\n<p>Le projet a fait du Canada un chef de file mondial dans le domaine de la recherche multidisciplinaire en g\u00e9nomique sur le stress abiotique des v\u00e9g\u00e9taux et a fourni des outils de base \u00e0 la mise au point de plantes r\u00e9sistant au stress abiotique. Par exemple, un projet financ\u00e9 par G\u00e9nome Canada et dirig\u00e9 par M. Brian Fowler de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Saskatchewan utilise les connaissances et les ressources produites par notre projet pour mettre au point un bl\u00e9 r\u00e9sistant au froid, au moyen de programmes de s\u00e9lection. De plus, le projet a \u00e9tabli, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle internationale, des liens avec des centres de recherche importants aux \u00c9tats-U nis, en Australie et en Europe qui ont renforc\u00e9 les programmes d\u2019am\u00e9lioration des cultures au Canada, sur le double plan technique et organisationnel.<\/p>\n<p>La plantation de cultures plus r\u00e9sistantes aux faibles temp\u00e9ratures pourrait faire \u00e9pargner des millions de dollars \u00e0 un grand nombre d\u2019agriculteurs et aux entreprises connexes dans les Prairies.
