De plus en plus, toutefois, devant l\u2019ampleur de l\u2019empreinte laiss\u00e9e par la production et l\u2019utilisation de ces carburants dans l\u2019environnement, nous cherchons des solutions de rechange durables. L\u2019une des solutions les plus int\u00e9ressantes fait appel aux mati\u00e8res v\u00e9g\u00e9tales pour la production de biocarburants. Une \u00e9conomie bas\u00e9e sur l\u2019utilisation de ces ressources renouvelables aura besoin de produits faits \u00e0 partir des cultures, de mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res et de d\u00e9chets agricoles.<\/p>\n<p>Cette bio\u00e9conomie tournera autour de nouveaux proc\u00e9d\u00e9s qui transformeront des mati\u00e8res de faible co\u00fbt en produits \u00e0 forte valeur, tout en r\u00e9duisant au minimum la lib\u00e9ration de dioxyde de carbone dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re. Notre \u00e9quipe d\u2019ing\u00e9nieurs chimiques, de biologistes et d\u2019experts en \u00e9laboration des politiques appliquera nos connaissances du s\u00e9quen\u00e7age des g\u00e8nes et de la mod\u00e9lisation math\u00e9matique \u00e0 l\u2019identification, au criblage, \u00e0 l\u2019analyse et au clonage de nouvelles prot\u00e9ines et communaut\u00e9s de microorganismes. Nous d\u00e9terminerons les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s qui leur permettent de jouer un r\u00f4le de catalyseur pour transformer des r\u00e9sidus et des d\u00e9chets v\u00e9g\u00e9taux de faible valeur en bioproduits int\u00e9ressants. Ces microorganismes ou microbes sont indispensables \u00e0 la fermentation qui intervient dans la transformation en carburant de ces mati\u00e8res agricoles renouvelables. Nous d\u00e9terminerons de plus les microbes que nous pouvons utiliser pour remettre en \u00e9tat des eaux et des terres contamin\u00e9es, en utilisant leur fonction naturelle de recycleur de la nature pour d\u00e9grader la pollution dans des sites contamin\u00e9s. Nous avons d\u00e9j\u00e0 travaill\u00e9 avec des usines de p\u00e2tes et papiers \u00e0 la mise au point de proc\u00e9d\u00e9s microbiens qui ont r\u00e9duit les sous-produits nuisibles et g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 de l&rsquo;\u00e9nergie pour alimenter leur fonctionnement. Nous avons \u00e9galement commercialis\u00e9 une communaut\u00e9 microbienne appel\u00e9e KB-1, qui sert d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e0 nettoyer des sites contamin\u00e9s par des solvants.<\/p>\n<p>Nous pr\u00e9voyons, au cours de ce projet, appliquer nos connaissances en recherche fondamentale et nos comp\u00e9tences \u00e0 la mise au point d\u2019autres communaut\u00e9s microbiennes afin de transformer, de r\u00e9utiliser, de recycler et de rendre inoffensifs des contaminants et des sous-produits des proc\u00e9d\u00e9s industriels et agricoles courants. Nous voulons contribuer aux proc\u00e9d\u00e9s qui feront des mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res agricoles des biocarburants que les bioraffineries produiront dans l\u2019avenir.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(En anglais seulement)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Integrated GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS Research:<\/strong> Framing New Bio-technologies to Aid Regulatory Decision-Making<br \/>\n<strong>GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS Project Leader<\/strong>: Douglas Reeve, University of Toronto<\/p>\n<p><u>Summary<\/u><br \/>\nOur team has had success in the commercialization of a microbial consortium, called KB-1\u2122, which is the only such consortium so far to gain approval through Environment\u00a0Canada\u2019s New Substances Notification Regulations. Unfortunately, the development of KB-1\u2122 is a rare example of a successful Canadian bioremediation project. Its development and approval required a decade-long effort, not only of genomics, microbiology and engineering, but also of discussion with government agencies. We will use our experience with KB-1\u2122 as the basis for developing a framework for the integration of scientific research and public policy analysis. Barriers to the entry of new bioproducts to the marketplace often come down to a lack of familiarity by end users, governments and regulators.<\/p>\n<p>Working with these groups, our aim is to lower barriers to entry by generating a comprehensive plan for introducing new bioproducts. We will integrate scientific, economic and policy data in studies that aim to provide comparisons of new technologies with old to help decision-making by regulators, industrial users, and policy makers. Much of this work will be carried out in collaboration with a new programme in Engineering and Public Policy at the University of Toronto, whose mandate is to promote studies at the intersection of public policy and technology so that sound policy judgments can be made on the basis of well-developed and quantitative science.<\/p>\n<p>We will approach this study in the following ways. First, we will devise quantitative methods for assessing the environmental and resource impacts of new bioproducts compared to similar, petroleum-derived products. Second, we will use these methods to assess the relative merits of the new biological products and processes developed in this research project.
