Au Canada, les for\u00eats de conif\u00e8res constituent la plus importante source renouvelable de lignocellulose utilis\u00e9e pour produire de l\u2019\u00e9nergie et des produits du papier et du bois. La compr\u00e9hension de la biologie du dendroctone du pin ponderosa, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 laquelle on pourra pr\u00e9voir les infestations futures et les ma\u00eetriser, repr\u00e9sente une importante contribution \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9conomie des for\u00eats canadiennes, en particulier en ce qui a trait \u00e0 la production \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00eame si les quantit\u00e9s consid\u00e9rables de bois mort en raison de la pullulation du dentroctone du pin ponderosa ont cr\u00e9\u00e9 un exc\u00e9dent inattendu de mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques possibles, cet approvisionnement ne sera pas n\u00e9cessairement durable dans l\u2019avenir. Avant de faire des investissements strat\u00e9giques dans l\u2019industrie foresti\u00e8re, il faut am\u00e9liorer les m\u00e9thodes actuelles de pr\u00e9vision des mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res. L\u2019infestation du dendroctone du pin ponderosa comprend trois \u00e9l\u00e9ments en interaction : les arbres h\u00f4tes, le pin tordu latifoli\u00e9 et le pin gris, l\u2019insecte comme tel et les multiples esp\u00e8ces fongiques associ\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019insecte ravageur qui tuent les arbres.<\/p>\n<p>Notre \u00e9tude se divise en quatre volets. Premi\u00e8rement, nous ferons des \u00e9tudes approfondies en g\u00e9nomique des trois organismes, en particulier les g\u00e8nes importants dans leur interaction. Deuxi\u00e8mement, nous utiliserons l\u2019information acquise pour dresser une carte des relations des populations de ces organismes, selon l\u2019emplacement g\u00e9ographique, l\u2019heure, l\u2019environnement et le climat. Troisi\u00e8mement, nous utiliserons aussi l\u2019information acquise pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment pour cr\u00e9er des mod\u00e8les susceptibles de pr\u00e9voir la probabilit\u00e9 d\u2019une pullulation du dendroctone du pin ponderosa n\u2019importe o\u00f9, \u00e0 un moment donn\u00e9. Quatri\u00e8mement, nous utiliserons toute l\u2019information accumul\u00e9e pour r\u00e9aliser une analyse \u00e9conomique de l\u2019utilisation des for\u00eats pour la production \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique. Ce projet est unique parce que nous pourrons combiner toutes les donn\u00e9es g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques, g\u00e9nomiques, g\u00e9ographiques et \u00e9conomiques pour brosser un tableau d\u00e9taill\u00e9 de la menace d\u2019une \u00e9pid\u00e9mie du dendroctone du pin ponderosa. Notre projet de g\u00e9nomique appliqu\u00e9e a pour objet g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de produire de nouvelles donn\u00e9es et de nouveaux outils bas\u00e9s sur la g\u00e9nomique qui am\u00e9lioreront les pr\u00e9dictions de l\u2019approvisionnement en mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques renouvelables provenant des for\u00eats de conif\u00e8res, en nous servant de l&rsquo;infestation actuelle du dendroctone du pin ponderosa comme exemple d\u2019un important syst\u00e8me h\u00f4te-insecte ravageur-agent pathog\u00e8ne.<\/p>\n<p>(En anglais seulement.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Integrated GE3LS Research:<\/strong> A model of the effects of epidemics on forest feedstock<br \/>\n<strong>GE3LS Project Leaders: <\/strong>Brian Aukema, Barry Cooke, Tim Williamson \u2013 Natural Resources Canada Grant Hauer, University of Alberta<br \/>\n<u>Summary<\/u><br \/>\nConifer forests are Canada\u2019s largest renewable source of lignocellulose. Their sustainable use for bioenergy production would form a strategic part of economic diversification within the forestry sector and help alleviate our dependence on fossil fuels. Drawing on feedstock from conifer forests affected by the mountain pine beetle epidemic to generate biofuels would also help mitigate some of the negative economic and environmental impacts of such large-scale disturbance on this valuable resource. Our integrated team of investigators with experience in environmental risk assessment will use genomic data in developing models for forecasting the possibility of future \u00a0pinebeetle outbreaks in both time and geographical location.<\/p>\n<p>We will model the spread and likelihood of a pine-beetle outbreak using genomic data for the pine beetle and its associated fungal species. Then, we will use these data to devise environmental-risk models to improve our capacity to estimate the likelihood of outbreaks of mountain pine beetle infestations. This will allow more accurate estimates of fibre supply. We will then combine this information with estimates of forestdeterioration rates due to the pine beetle with economic variables such as prices of bioenergy, costs, and discount rates.
