Il faudra donc mettre au point de nouvelles mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res pour la production de biocarburants, dont la majorit\u00e9 devrait provenir des plantes ligneuses et des arbres. Gr\u00e2ce au financement de G\u00e9nome Canada, des chercheurs \u00e9tudient les fondements g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques de la croissance des arbres de m\u00eame que les caract\u00e9ristiques associ\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019utilit\u00e9 pour les biocarburants de deux esp\u00e8ces de peuplier. Les chercheurs veulent mettre au point des arbres \u00e0 r\u00e9volution courte et \u00e0 croissance rapide qui peuvent pousser dans divers climats au Canada et qui peuvent \u00eatre imm\u00e9diatement transform\u00e9s en \u00e9thanol, tout en r\u00e9duisant un minimum l\u2019empreinte \u00e9cologique.
