La diminution des stocks de saumon de l\u2019Atlantique a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 faire na\u00eetre le secteur actuel de l\u2019aquaculture qui g\u00e9n\u00e8re annuellement plus de 200 millions de dollars en recettes au Nouveau-\u00adBrunswick seulement. Pour maintenir la croissance et la stabilit\u00e9 de ce secteur, il faut maintenant diversifier le secteur et se tourner vers l\u2019\u00e9levage d\u2019autres esp\u00e8ces comme la morue, ou gadiculture.<\/p>\n<p>Les estimations actuelles montrent que la gadiculture \u00e0 Terre-\u00adNeuve seulement pourrait g\u00e9n\u00e9rer des recettes de 100 millions de dollars, tout en r\u00e9pondant \u00e0 la demande d\u2019une ressource alimentaire de haute qualit\u00e9 de la part des consommateurs. Des programmes de gadiculture existent en Norv\u00e8ge et en Islande. Le secteur aquicole du Canada reconna\u00eet que la s\u00e9lection des g\u00e9niteurs est essentielle \u00e0 la production de stocks sup\u00e9rieurs de morue pour l\u2019\u00e9levage.<\/p>\n<p>Ce programme sera r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en partenariat avec l\u2019industrie, les universit\u00e9s, le gouvernement et les organismes sans but lucratif et fera appel aux technologies de la g\u00e9nomique, alli\u00e9es \u00e0 des m\u00e9thodes de reproduction s\u00e9lective bas\u00e9es sur les familles pour identifier les morues dont les traits pr\u00e9sentent une valeur commerciale, par exemple une meilleure croissance, un \u00e2ge tardif de maturation sexuelle et la r\u00e9sistance aux maladies et au stress. L\u2019\u00e9quipe du projet s\u00e9quencera des g\u00e8nes pour identifier les marqueurs mol\u00e9culaires associ\u00e9s \u00e0 un rendement sup\u00e9rieur en \u00e9levage.<\/p>\n<p>(En anglais seulement)<br \/>\n<strong>Integrated GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS Research<\/strong>: Intellectual property, environmental, and public consultation issues relevant to the breeding of elite cod broodstock<br \/>\n<strong>GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS Project Leaders<\/strong>: Keith Culver, University of New Brunswick<\/p>\n<p><u>Summary<\/u><br \/>\nDevelopment of elite cod broodstock will provide social and economic benefits for Canadians to the extent that intellectual property (IP) interests in this broodstock are eligible for legal protection, and use of this broodstock complies with Canadian environmental law and Canada\u2019s international obligations. Use of elite cod broodstock in particular coastal communities raises further issues regarding the obligation to consult affected public groups.<\/p>\n<p>Research on GE\u00b3LS issues relevant to cod aquaculture will be conducted by working closely with the project\u2019s scientists and industry partners to provide law and policy options. The GE\u00b3LS team will develop and disseminate solution-oriented legal and policy options regarding (1) legal ownership of commercially valuable research results, (2) the status of elite cod broodstock under Canadian environmental law and Canada\u2019s international obligations, and (3) ethical and legal options regarding benefit sharing and improved methods of consultation with affected publics.
