La leuc\u00e9mie, les cancers de la peau, du c\u00f4lon, du sein et du cerveau font partie des maladies que les chercheurs \u00e9tudient actuellement comme des maladies des cellules souches.<\/p>\n<p>Dirig\u00e9 par le D<sup>r<\/sup> Dick, le projet Cytom\u00e8tre de flux bas\u00e9 sur la spectrom\u00e9trie de masse, m\u00e9thodes et applications, vise \u00e0 mettre au point des outils qui permettront d\u2019identifier les cellules souches canc\u00e9reuses rares dans des \u00e9chantillons pr\u00e9lev\u00e9s sur des patients, et d\u2019\u00e9tudier les voies canc\u00e9reuses distinctes dans ces cellules souches pour diff\u00e9rents types de cancer. La plupart des m\u00e9thodes actuelles de traitement du cancer ne cherchent pas \u00e0 identifier et \u00e0 exploiter les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s cellulaires uniques des cellules malades. Les cellules souches canc\u00e9reuses sont peu caract\u00e9ris\u00e9es parce qu\u2019elles sont rares et difficiles \u00e0 isoler par les moyens traditionnels et parce qu\u2019il n\u2019existe pas de m\u00e9thodes d\u2019essai pertinentes. L\u2019incapacit\u00e9 d\u2019offrir \u00e0 des patients donn\u00e9s les th\u00e9rapies qui leur conviendraient est l\u2019une des principales limites de la th\u00e9rapie anticanc\u00e9reuse moderne.<\/p>\n<p>Le projet Cytom\u00e8tre de flux bas\u00e9 sur la spectrom\u00e9trie de masse, m\u00e9thodes et applications aidera les m\u00e9decins \u00e0 poser des diagnostics personnalis\u00e9s qui pourront servir \u00e0 prescrire la th\u00e9rapie adapt\u00e9e \u00e0 des maladies pr\u00e9cises. Les patients atteints de cancer en tireront grandement profit, entre autres parce qu\u2019ils obtiendront des traitements efficaces en temps opportun, et souffrirons moins d\u2019effets secondaires d\u00e9bilitants. Le projet m\u00e8nera \u00e0 la conception de nouveaux outils de diagnostic qui hausseront la norme des soins offerts par les h\u00f4pitaux, les centres m\u00e9dicaux et les services de recherche partout dans le monde.<\/p>\n<p>La participation de l\u2019industrie tout au long du projet transformera la science en produits concrets d\u2019ici cinq ans. Ces outils commerciaux assureront non seulement d\u2019importantes \u00e9conomies de co\u00fbt dans les soins de sant\u00e9 offerts aux patients partout dans le monde, mais ils entra\u00eeneront aussi la cr\u00e9ation de nombreux nouveaux emplois tr\u00e8s sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9s pour les Canadiennes et les Canadiens et engendreront des recettes qui se chiffreront en millions de dollars.
