La lutte contre les maladies virulentes comme le SRAS est une v\u00e9ritable course contre la montre : un obstacle de taille lorsqu\u2019on sait que la plupart des technologies de diagnostic sont lentes et co\u00fbteuses, qu\u2019elles font appel \u00e0 du personnel hautement sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 et qu\u2019elles sont difficiles d\u2019application aux points de service ou sur le terrain. L\u2019inexistence de tests rapides co\u00fbte cher : diagnostics impr\u00e9cis, th\u00e9rapies peu pertinentes, surutilisation des antibiotiques, d\u00e9veloppement de la r\u00e9sistance aux m\u00e9dicaments, co\u00fbts \u00e9lev\u00e9s des soins de sant\u00e9, et difficult\u00e9 de limiter l\u2019ampleur des \u00e9pid\u00e9mies.<\/p>\n<p>Pour que les tests aident \u00e0 pr\u00e9venir les infections, explique le D<sup>r<\/sup> Bergeron, les m\u00e9decins et leurs patients ont besoin de r\u00e9sultats en moins d\u2019une heure. La mise au point de tests mol\u00e9culaires de diagnostic, rapides et de prix abordable, est essentielle \u00e0 l\u2019atteinte de cet objectif. Dirig\u00e9 par le D<sup>r <\/sup>Bergeron, le projet Nouvelles technologies mol\u00e9culaires th\u00e9ranostiques rapides pour la d\u00e9tection des acides nucl\u00e9iques fera du diagnostic des maladies infectieuses une technologie du XXI e si\u00e8cle. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la combinaison de l\u2019expertise unique et compl\u00e9mentaire de chercheurs de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Laval, de la University of California d\u2019Irvine et de trois instituts du Conseil national de recherches du Canada, l\u2019\u00e9quipe du D<sup>r<\/sup> Bergeron met au point de nouvelles technologies d\u2019identification rapide et peu co\u00fbteuse des microbes qui causent des infections.<\/p>\n<p>Dans le cadre du projet Technologies mol\u00e9culaires th\u00e9ranostiques, l\u2019\u00e9quipe mettra au point des instruments microscopiques qui seront int\u00e9gr\u00e9s sur des disques compacts grav\u00e9s de microcanaux au travers desquels les \u00e9chantillons pourront se d\u00e9placer par force centrifuge. Un CD servira \u00e0 pr\u00e9parer des \u00e9chantillons cliniques et \u00e0 en extraire le mat\u00e9riel g\u00e9n\u00e9tique\u037e un autre identifiera rapidement les acides nucl\u00e9iques sur les puces \u00e0 ADN et un troisi\u00e8me amplifiera les s\u00e9quences de g\u00e8nes cibles.<\/p>\n<p>Ces instruments permettront de r\u00e9aliser des tests de diagnostic qui d\u00e9tecteront les virus des voies respiratoires et les microbes qui infectent le courant sanguin sur un seul CD de microsyst\u00e8me d\u2019analyse totale (\u00b5TAS), facile \u00e0 utiliser, qui extraira, amplifiera et d\u00e9tectera les acides nucl\u00e9iques de tout organisme vivant, en moins d\u2019une heure. Les chercheurs pourront d\u00e9tecter simultan\u00e9ment un nombre bien sup\u00e9rieur de microbes et le co\u00fbt peu \u00e9lev\u00e9 de fabrication du CD le mettra \u00e0 la port\u00e9e m\u00eame des pays en d\u00e9veloppement.
