La compr\u00e9hension de la fonction des g\u00e8nes et de leur r\u00f4le dans la maladie est l\u2019un des grands d\u00e9fis de la science biom\u00e9dicale et de la sant\u00e9 humaine. Pour ce, il faut comprendre leur fonction normale et ce qui se produit lorsqu\u2019ils cessent de bien fonctionner. Comme on ne peut le faire en recourant aux humains, les chercheurs utilisent des souris qui poss\u00e8dent 99 % des g\u00e8nes codants des humains.<\/p>\n<p>Gr\u00e2ce au financement de G\u00e9nome Canada, des chercheurs canadiens participent \u00e0 un ambitieux projet international qui vise \u00e0 comprendre la fonction de chacun de nos 20 000 g\u00e8nes. Par l\u2019\u00e9tude des probl\u00e8mes de d\u00e9veloppement et des maladies dans 280 mod\u00e8les murins qui chacun auront un g\u00e8ne anormal ou mut\u00e9 diff\u00e9rent, les chercheurs d\u00e9termineront l\u2019effet de chaque mutation. Ils d\u00e9termineront ainsi si le g\u00e8ne ou la prot\u00e9ine produite pourrait \u00eatre une cible de m\u00e9dicament ou utilis\u00e9e pour diagnostiquer la maladie. Le potentiel commercial de ces travaux est \u00e9norme \u2013 34 des 100 m\u00e9dicaments les plus vendus aux \u00c9tats-\u00adUnis sont issus de ce type de recherche \u00e0 l\u2019aide de mod\u00e8les murins.<\/p>\n<p>Les d\u00e9couvertes de ce projet financ\u00e9 par G\u00e9nome Canada alimenteront le pipeline biopharmaceutique canadien et feront du g\u00e9nome humain non plus une simple liste de g\u00e8nes, mais un plan directeur vivant. Une \u00e9quipe GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS se penchera en m\u00eame temps sur les enjeux \u00e9thiques et juridiques de ce type de recherche.
