Les plantes se servent alors de cette ammoniaque pour pousser. Les agriculteurs utilisent donc, bien souvent, d&rsquo;importantes quantit\u00e9s d\u2019engrais azot\u00e9 pour am\u00e9liorer le rendement des r\u00e9coltes. Toutefois, un exc\u00e8s d&rsquo;engrais entra\u00eene des probl\u00e8mes environnementaux, car ce produit chimique contamine les sources d&rsquo;eau douce.<\/p>\n<p>Comme les l\u00e9gumineuses sont tr\u00e8s importantes pour l&rsquo;industrie agricole canadienne, l&rsquo;\u00e9tude de la fixation de l&rsquo;azote m\u00e8nera \u00e0 des moyens de contrer ces probl\u00e8mes environnementaux et de r\u00e9duire les co\u00fbts des agriculteurs. Bien qu&rsquo;on ait d\u00e9j\u00e0 r\u00e9alis\u00e9 le s\u00e9quen\u00e7age du g\u00e9nome du Sinorhizobium meliloti, on ne conna\u00eet pas la fonction de nombreux g\u00e8nes de la bact\u00e9rie.<\/p>\n<p>Ce projet porte sur ces g\u00e8nes afin de d\u00e9terminer leur fonction et leur importance pour la survie de la bact\u00e9rie. Outre ses avantages pour l&rsquo;agriculture, cette recherche contribue \u00e9galement \u00e0 notre compr\u00e9hension de maladies de plantes et d&rsquo;animaux transmises du sol en permettant de comparer les micro\u00adorganismes du sol.
