Il s\u2019agit d\u2019une immense ressource renouvelable qui repr\u00e9sente plus de 80 milliards de dollars annuellement en produits du bois, en papier et en \u00e9nergie, et quelque 400 000 emplois dans notre \u00e9conomie. Le Canada livre une vive concurrence, en ce qui concerne les produits forestiers, \u00e0 d\u2019autres pays au climat plus temp\u00e9r\u00e9. Le Canada sera tr\u00e8s avantag\u00e9 si nous parvenons \u00e0 acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer la mise au point de nouvelles cultures arbustives qui poussent plus vite et produisent davantage de bois. Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 maintenant, on a utilis\u00e9 des m\u00e9thodes traditionnelles de s\u00e9lection des arbres, qui sont toujours tr\u00e8s lentes\u037e il faut des d\u00e9cennies avant d\u2019obtenir des r\u00e9sultats. Nous voulons acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer le processus \u00e0 l\u2019aide de la recherche en g\u00e9nomique.<\/p>\n<p>Nous avons cr\u00e9\u00e9 quelques outils de base qui nous permettront, \u00e0 nous et \u00e0 d\u2019autres dans le monde, d\u2019effectuer des recherches g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques sur les \u00e9pinettes et les peupliers. Ces recherches nous donneront une compr\u00e9hension approfondie de nombreux aspects de la croissance des arbres qui seront importants pour apporter des am\u00e9liorations g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques comme la formation du bois et la d\u00e9fense contre les insectes ravageurs et d\u2019autres agents de stress environnementaux.<\/p>\n<p>Nous avons obtenu la s\u00e9quence d\u2019ADN de quelque 70 000 marqueurs g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques appel\u00e9s s\u00e9quence g\u00e9nomique exprim\u00e9e (EST) pour l\u2019\u00e9pinette et le peuplier. Nous avons cr\u00e9\u00e9 presque 2 000 versions mutantes sp\u00e9ciales des peupliers, qui sont mis en r\u00e9serve pour des recherches ult\u00e9rieures. Nous utilisons une m\u00e9thode appel\u00e9e puce \u00e0 ADN qui nous permettra d\u2019\u00e9tudier les g\u00e8nes du peuplier de l\u2019\u00e9pinette importants pour de nombreux aspects de la croissance et du d\u00e9veloppement des arbres. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des collaborations internationales, nous mettons en place une grande base de donn\u00e9es g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques sur le peuplier et l\u2019\u00e9pinette.
