La communaut\u00e9 scientifique mondiale dispose des outils et de l\u2019expertise pour traiter les nouvelles maladies infectieuses ou celles qui resurgissent. Un projet novateur a \u00e9t\u00e9 mis sur pied pour r\u00e9unir ces diff\u00e9rents efforts de recherche afin d\u2019examiner syst\u00e9matiquement les agents pathog\u00e8nes qui peuvent \u00eatre mortels et de trouver rapidement des solutions scientifiques.<\/p>\n<p>M. Brett Finlay, microbiologiste et M. Peter Wall, professeur distingu\u00e9 de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-\u00adBritannique et leurs coll\u00e8gues de l\u2019Universit\u00e9, MM. Robert Brunham et Neil Reiner, sont les directeurs du projet G\u00e9nomique fonctionnelle des nouvelles maladies infectieuses.<\/p>\n<p>Ce projet s\u2019efforcera d\u2019\u00e9lucider, par une approche g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, la biologie de l\u2019infection de maladies graves comme le SRAS, la grippe, le virus du Nil occidental, l\u2019ESB, l\u2019agent pathog\u00e8ne<em> E. coli<\/em>, la tuberculose, le paludisme et le VIH\/sida. La m\u00e9thode consiste \u00e0 identifier des cibles de m\u00e9dicaments par l\u2019\u00e9tude de r\u00e9seaux d\u2019interactions prot\u00e9iques et l\u2019application de la g\u00e9nomique computationnelle d\u2019avant\u00adgarde. Les r\u00e9seaux d\u2019interactions prot\u00e9iques sont complexes et interviennent dans les processus catalytiques, la synth\u00e8se de prot\u00e9ines et l\u2019expression des g\u00e8nes dans la cellule.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019\u00e9quipe de recherche diffusera ses m\u00e9thodes exp\u00e9rimentales pour l\u2019\u00e9tude de diff\u00e9rents agents pathog\u00e8nes et utilisera des m\u00e9thodes pang\u00e9nomiques pour examiner les agents pathog\u00e8nes courants. Cette nouvelle base de connaissances sera particuli\u00e8rement pr\u00e9cieuse si de nouveaux agents infectieux se d\u00e9veloppent \u2013 de nouvelles souches d\u2019agents pathog\u00e8nes existants, par exemple, ou des agents pathog\u00e8nes auparavant inconnus.<\/p>\n<p>Le projet de recherche cr\u00e9era de nouveaux d\u00e9bouch\u00e9s pour les soci\u00e9t\u00e9s pharmaceutiques et biotechnologiques et assurera une \u00e9quipe d\u2019intervention rapide compos\u00e9e de chercheurs en g\u00e9nomique hautement comp\u00e9tents, pr\u00eats \u00e0 trouver des solutions scientifiques aux nouvelles menaces infectieuses, lorsqu\u2019elles se feront jour.<\/p>\n<p>(En anglais seulement)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Integrated GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS Research<\/strong>: Understanding the Role of Experts in Risk Communication<\/p>\n<p><strong>GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS Project Leaders<\/strong>: Valia Lestou and Katayoon (Kati) Riyazi University of British Columbia<\/p>\n<p><u>Summary<\/u><\/p>\n<p>The GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS component of this project is interested in understanding the role of experts in risk communication, an area of research that has been under-explored. GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS researchers, Drs. Valia Lestou and Katayoon Riyazi will draw on their cross disciplinary backgrounds to help address the issues raised by the Canadian public regarding these innovative technologies. They have two key research objectives:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To investigate how experts make choices about communicating health risks before and during health crises. This will allow us to understand how scientists communicate scientific evidence to each other and policy-makers, how such information is translated into public health policy, and how and what information is communicated to the public.<\/li>\n<li>To conduct a comparative ethical analysis of antiviral and vaccine priority in pandemic influenza plans. Here the aim is to understand the perspectives of health care workers and the public on a range of ethical issues, such as the duty to care and allocation of resources during health crises. The research will bring together issues around science, health policy and ethics and will be critical in defining the emerging field of \u2018Public Health Ethics\u2019 in Canada.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The knowledge gained from this research will be indispensable for establishing ethical and effective risk communications strategies and for ultimately fostering dialogue and improving the relationship between scientists, policy-makers and the lay public before and during crisis situations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Les maladies infectieuses sont la principale cause de mortalit\u00e9 pr\u00e9matur\u00e9e dans le monde et la cinqui\u00e8me cause en importance au Canada.
