Notre immunit\u00e9 inn\u00e9e peut cependant \u00eatre surstimul\u00e9e, ce qui cr\u00e9e l\u2019inflammation des tissus et m\u00eame la s\u00e9ptic\u00e9mie \u2013 une infection mortelle du sang ou des tissus.<\/p>\n<p>M. Robert Hancock, professeur de microbiologie et d\u2019immunologie \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-Britannique, et M. Lorne Babiuk, professeur de microbiologie v\u00e9t\u00e9rinaire \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Saskatchewan, sont les directeurs du projet Pathog\u00e9nomique de l\u2019immunit\u00e9 inn\u00e9e (ou PI2 ). \u00c0 partir d\u2019un grand nombre des r\u00e9sultats de recherche exceptionnels d\u2019un projet ant\u00e9rieur de G\u00e9nome Canada, Pathog\u00e9nomique fonctionnelle de l\u2019immunit\u00e9 des muqueuses, ce projet nous permettra de mieux comprendre les r\u00e9actions immunitaires des humains et des animaux. Des g\u00e8nes pr\u00e9cis seront neutralis\u00e9s dans des cellules embryonnaires de souris et dans des souris produites \u00e0 partir de ces cellules, et les uns comme les autres seront soumis \u00e0 un important agent pathog\u00e8ne, Salmonella, qui se trouve dans la nourriture et qui cause une infection intestinale et la diarrh\u00e9e. L\u2019\u00e9quipe du projet ciblera un \u00e9ventail de g\u00e8nes qui repr\u00e9sentent des voies et des points de d\u00e9cision importants dans l\u2019immunit\u00e9 inn\u00e9e pour les neutraliser.<\/p>\n<p>Des cellules humaines et bovines seront \u00e9galement cibl\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019aide des m\u00e9thodes ARNsi, qui utilisent une cat\u00e9gorie de courtes mol\u00e9cules d\u2019ARN (de 20 \u00e0 25 nucl\u00e9otides de long), qui nuit \u00e0 l\u2019expression des g\u00e8nes. En neutralisant ces g\u00e8nes sp\u00e9cifiques, les chercheurs pourront d\u00e9terminer leur importance dans les infections humaines et animales. Le projet, qui r\u00e9unit une \u00e9quipe de chercheurs de calibre mondial du Canada, du Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute en Grande-Bretagne, du Trinity College Dublin et de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 nationale de Singapour a pour objet, sous la direction de MM. Hancock et Babiuk, d\u2019accro\u00eetre nos connaissances sur les m\u00e9canismes importants de lutte contre les infections du syst\u00e8me immunitaire. On pr\u00e9voit \u00e9galement que le projet PI2 fournira la base de nouvelles m\u00e9thodes de lutte contre les infections chez les animaux et les humains.<\/p>\n<p>(En anglais seulement.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Integrated GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS Research:<\/strong> Moving Science out of the Laboratory: Why are Some Scientists More Translational than Others?<br \/>\n<strong>GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS Project Leaders: <\/strong>Janet Atkinson-Grosjean University of British Columbia<br \/>\n<u>Summary<\/u><br \/>\nMost large-scale scientific projects are expected to translate research results into clinical practice or commercial profit. Many academic researchers, however, are reluctant to exploit their discoveries. They feel uncomfortable moving beyond basic research into market-based or clinical applications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Janet Atkinson-Grosjean, Senior Research Associate in the W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics (UBC), will examine the social, cultural and political factors that affect scientists\u2019 willingness to translate discoveries into practice and\/or profit. For market-based translation (\u2018merchant science\u2019) in particular, researchers must develop skills in non-traditional activities such as intellectual property protection and product promotion. But the market also demands traditional \u2018reputational capital\u2019 in the form of advanced scientific publications, grants, and awards. Successful merchant scientists and translational researchers are able to switch with ease between scientific and entrepreneurial skill-sets. These scientists often depict their work in moral terms, suggesting it will increase overall prosperity by creating jobs or advancing therapies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By examining the intersection of science, public policy and entrepreneurship in PI2, this project will try to frame the ethical dimensions of translational research and merchant science.
