La th\u00e9rapie de transfert de g\u00e8nes a cependant soulev\u00e9 d\u2019importantes questions de s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Il faut plus de recherche li\u00e9e aux aspects cliniques, par exemple. Les g\u00e8nes doivent \u00e9galement \u00eatre diffus\u00e9s dans des types pr\u00e9cis de cellules et \u00e0 des endroits pr\u00e9cis dans le g\u00e9nome, pour que la th\u00e9rapie ne cause pas involontairement de modification de cellules saines ou de mutation de g\u00e8nes.<\/p>\n<p>Mme Elizabeth M. Simpson, titulaire de la chaire de recherche du Canada en g\u00e9n\u00e9tique et sur le comportement et chercheure principale au Centre for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics du Child and Family Research Institute de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-Britannique, dirige le Projet des promoteurs Pl\u00e9iades, con\u00e7u pour utiliser les plus r\u00e9centes techniques scientifiques pour r\u00e9pondre aux questions de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 qui entourent les th\u00e9rapies g\u00e9niques. Le projet a pour objet de cr\u00e9er une \u00ab trousse \u00e0 outils \u00bb novatrice de 160 minipromoteurs de l\u2019ADN humain, con\u00e7us \u00e0 l\u2019aide de technologies de la bioinformatique et biologiquement valid\u00e9s, qui dirigeront l\u2019expression des g\u00e8nes dans des r\u00e9gions du cerveau importantes sur le plan th\u00e9rapeutique.<\/p>\n<p>Les promoteurs sont des s\u00e9quences d\u2019ADN qui r\u00e9gulent l\u2019expression des g\u00e8nes et d\u00e9terminent quelles prot\u00e9ines seront fabriqu\u00e9es. La validation des minipromoteurs comprendra l\u2019insertion de chaque promoteur \u00e0 un endroit pr\u00e9cis du g\u00e9nome de la souris et la visualisation de l\u2019expression des g\u00e8nes dans le cerveau. La souris, dont le g\u00e9nome ressemble \u00e0 celui des humains, est l\u2019organisme de pr\u00e9dilection pour cette manipulation \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle des g\u00e8nes.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019un des points forts du projet Pl\u00e9iades est le regroupement de chercheurs canadiens tr\u00e8s qualifi\u00e9s en bioinformatique, en g\u00e9nomique \u00e0 haut rendement, en technologie des souris transg\u00e9niques pour trouver de nouvelles approches th\u00e9rapeutiques pour des troubles du cerveau comme l\u2019Alzheimer, le Parkinson, la d\u00e9pression, l\u2019autisme, la toxicomanie et le cancer. Pour examiner de pr\u00e8s les enjeux \u00e9thiques qui font na\u00eetre les exp\u00e9riences en th\u00e9rapie g\u00e9nique, l\u2019\u00e9quipe fait appel \u00e0 la bio\u00e9thicienne Fran\u00e7oise Baylis de la Dalhousie University. Finalement, un partenariat \u00e9troit avec BioPharma Solutions, une firme d\u2019experts-conseils en gestion et en communications qui se sp\u00e9cialise dans le d\u00e9veloppement de produits et la commercialisation, verra \u00e0 la diffusion \u00e9largie et l\u2019application des r\u00e9sultats de la recherche et de la ressource clinique.<\/p>\n<p>(En anglais seulement.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Integrated GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS Research<\/strong>: Communicating Controversial Science<br \/>\n<strong>GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS Project Leaders:<\/strong> Stephen Ward, University of British Columbia<br \/>\n<u>Summary<\/u><br \/>\nThis project aims to develop genetic tools to use as therapeutic interventions for brain disorders such as Alzheimer, Parkinson, depression, ADHD and autism. With the ultimate goal of developing better communications strategies for genomic journalists, the GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS portion of this project will focus on three interrelated areas of inquiry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First, the research will investigate the communication processes involved in getting information about genomics to the Canadian public. The research will also examine the role of journalists in the communication process, and how that role might change. Finally, the research will study how journalists should write and structure their genomic reports in ways that are socially responsible, so as to engage the public rather than act solely as a one-way conduit of science information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Under the direction of Dr. Stephen J. Ward, this project hopes to generate several positive outcomes for genomics communication, including the creation of the first course in science communication\/ journalism at a Canadian school of journalism.
