Elles produisent annuellement 75&nbsp;millions de livres de miel et pollinisent de nombreuses cultures de fruits, de l\u00e9gumes, de noix et d\u2019ol\u00e9agineux comme le canola. Par ces activit\u00e9s, leur contribution annuelle \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9conomie canadienne repr\u00e9sente plus de 4,6&nbsp;milliards de dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Le taux \u00e9lev\u00e9 de disparition de colonies d\u2019abeilles est particuli\u00e8rement alarmant, compte tenu de ce r\u00f4le essentiel, et il repr\u00e9sente une menace grave pour la productivit\u00e9 des entreprises agroalimentaires canadiennes et la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire du pays. Les apiculteurs canadiens ont perdu plus du quart de leurs colonies tous les hivers depuis 2006-2007, et dans certaines provinces, les pertes sont encore plus consid\u00e9rables depuis quelques ann\u00e9es. Le remplacement de ces pertes par l\u2019achat de reines-abeilles \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger, comme l\u2019ont fait les apiculteurs, cr\u00e9e des risques d\u2019importer de nouvelles maladies ou des souches envahissantes d\u2019abeilles (les abeilles \u00ab&nbsp;meurtri\u00e8res&nbsp;\u00bb des \u00c9tats-Unis, par exemple).<\/p>\n<p>Leonard Foster de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-Britannique et Amro Zayed de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 York dirigent un projet dont l\u2019objectif est d\u2019assurer la protection et la durabilit\u00e9 de l\u2019industrie apicole au Canada. L\u2019\u00e9quipe mettra au point des outils g\u00e9nomiques et prot\u00e9omiques qui fourniront des marqueurs pour reproduire de mani\u00e8re s\u00e9lective 12 caract\u00e9ristiques importantes du point de vue \u00e9conomique. Les apiculteurs pourront ainsi reproduire, rapidement et \u00e9conomiquement, des colonies d\u2019abeilles en sant\u00e9, r\u00e9sistantes aux maladies, productives et mieux \u00e0 m\u00eame de survivre aux hivers canadiens rigoureux. Ces progr\u00e8s permettront de r\u00e9duire la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d\u2019importer des abeilles d\u2019autres pays, mais ils ne l\u2019\u00e9limineront pas compl\u00e8tement. Pour cette raison, l\u2019\u00e9quipe mettra \u00e9galement au point un test de d\u00e9pistage exact et \u00e9conomique des abeilles \u00e0 la g\u00e9n\u00e9tique africanis\u00e9e (abeilles \u00ab&nbsp;meurtri\u00e8res&nbsp;\u00bb). Elle collaborera avec les apiculteurs et d\u2019autres intervenants et utilisateurs finaux pour s\u2019assurer que les apiculteurs auront acc\u00e8s \u00e0 ses outils et les utiliseront d\u2019ici la fin du projet. Ce projet aura des avantages \u00e9conomiques mesurables pour le Canada, y compris les apiculteurs et l\u2019industrie agroalimentaire, de m\u00eame que des retomb\u00e9es sociales pour le public canadien.
