Les cultures ont besoin de peu d\u2019herbicides, de pesticides ou d\u2019irrigation, ce qui les rend \u00e0 la fois de co\u00fbt abordable et \u00e9cologiques \u2013 mais jusqu\u2019\u00e0 maintenant, il y a eu peu de demandes pour ces fibres, des r\u00e9sidus une fois que les graines riches en lipides ont \u00e9t\u00e9 extraites. De plus en plus, toutefois, ces fibres sont utilis\u00e9es dans des march\u00e9s industriels, assurant une source de revenus secondaire aux agriculteurs.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019un des usages les plus prometteurs des biofibres est leur combinaison avec une r\u00e9sine qui en fait un mat\u00e9riau biocomposite. Ces biocomposites sont particuli\u00e8rement utiles dans l\u2019industrie automobile o\u00f9 leur faible poids, leur facilit\u00e9 de recyclage et leur bonne isolation les rendent plus avantageux que d\u2019autres mat\u00e9riaux. Le march\u00e9 des biofibres composites devrait cro\u00eetre de plus de 10 % par ann\u00e9e entre 2014 et 2019.<\/p>\n<p>M. David Levin, Ph. D., de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 du Manitoba collabore avec le Composites Innovation Centre, un centre d\u2019excellence reconnu \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle internationale et sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 dans la commercialisation des mat\u00e9riaux biocomposites, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9laboration et \u00e0 la mise \u00e0 l\u2019essai d\u2019une pi\u00e8ce prototype faite d\u2019un nouveau biocomposite pour un v\u00e9hicule utilis\u00e9 pour l\u2019application de la r\u00e9glementation sur le stationnement. Le biocomposite se compose de fibres de lin dont les caract\u00e9ristiques ont \u00e9t\u00e9 am\u00e9lior\u00e9es pour les utiliser dans des mat\u00e9riaux composites de pointe (mis au point dans le cadre de projets pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment financ\u00e9s par G\u00e9nome Canada) et une r\u00e9sine\/un polym\u00e8re de fixation produit par le laboratoire de M. Levin \u00e0 partir de souches microbiennes nouvelles. WestWard Industries (WI), une PME du Manitoba, fabriquera les v\u00e9hicules. Ce nouveau v\u00e9hicule l\u00e9ger \u00e0 faible empreinte de carbone permettra \u00e0 WI de tripler ses ventes annuelles aupr\u00e8s de clients existants et nouveaux d\u2019ici trois \u00e0 quatre ans. Le tambour composite devrait \u00e9galement faire diminuer du tiers les co\u00fbts de production des pi\u00e8ces qu\u2019il remplace et augmenter la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 au travail.
