Il est la culture \u00e0 la croissance la plus rapide du Canada et il produit un quart de toutes les recettes mon\u00e9taires agricoles. L\u2019huile de canola poss\u00e8de des concentrations \u00e9lev\u00e9es d\u2019acides gras mono-insatur\u00e9s et polyinsatur\u00e9s, ce qui la rend populaire aupr\u00e8s des consommateurs soucieux de leur sant\u00e9. L\u2019huile est \u00e9galement l\u00e9g\u00e8re et go\u00fbteuse, ce qui explique qu\u2019elle soit la pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e de nombreux chefs et transformateurs alimentaires. Une fois les graines broy\u00e9es pour en extraire l\u2019huile, les\u00a0restes fournissent un suppl\u00e9ment alimentaire hautement prot\u00e9in\u00e9 pour les animaux. La part de ce secteur dans l\u2019\u00e9conomie canadienne atteint annuellement 19,3 milliards de dollars; c\u2019est aussi quelque 250 000 emplois et 12,5 milliards de dollars en salaires.<\/p>\n<p>Le besoin d\u2019une huile saine est \u00e0 la hausse partout dans le monde et on s\u2019attend \u00e0 ce que la demande mondiale exige une augmentation de 40 % de la production canadienne de canola au cours de la prochaine d\u00e9cennie. Les exportations valent d\u00e9j\u00e0 quelque 3 milliards de dollars par ann\u00e9e. De toute \u00e9vidence, toute mesure gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 laquelle les graines de canola produiront en plus grande quantit\u00e9 une huile et un tourteau de qualit\u00e9 sup\u00e9rieure profitera consid\u00e9rablement aux agriculteurs et aux transformateurs canadiens.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est le but que se sont fix\u00e9 Dow AgroSciences Canada et M. Randall Weselake, Ph. D. Dow AgroSciences a fait des travaux pr\u00e9curseurs dans la mise au point d\u2019hybrides de canola pour la production d\u2019une huile saine alors que M. Weselake dirige le Phytola Centre de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de l\u2019Alberta, un organisme de recherche qui se consacre \u00e0 l\u2019offre de produits biotechnologiques d\u2019ol\u00e9agineux et de solutions technologiques qui tiennent compte de la demande du march\u00e9, en partenariat avec l\u2019industrie. Les travaux du chercheur ont men\u00e9 \u00e0 des outils g\u00e9nomiques qui peuvent contribuer \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer encore plus les graines de canola pour une production de qualit\u00e9 encore sup\u00e9rieure d\u2019huile et de tourteau.<\/p>\n<p>Ce projet alliera les r\u00e9sultats de M. Weselake et ceux de Dow AgroSciences pour ajouter de la valeur aux graines de canola. L\u2019objectif est d\u2019utiliser les approches g\u00e9nomiques pour am\u00e9liorer la teneur en huile des graines et leur valeur prot\u00e9inique, tout en r\u00e9duisant la teneur en fibres et en acides gras satur\u00e9s.
