M<sup>me<\/sup>\u00a0Elizabeth Edwards, Ph.\u00a0D., de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Toronto, travaille en collaboration avec SiREM, un chef de file canadien de la biorem\u00e9diation, pour mettre \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle et commercialiser des cultures ana\u00e9robies de bioaugmentation pour la rem\u00e9diation <em>in situ<\/em> des BTEX. Ces cultures ont \u00e9t\u00e9 mises au point dans le laboratoire de M<sup>me<\/sup>\u00a0Edwards o\u00f9 l\u2019\u00e9quipe de chercheurs s\u2019est servi des connaissances g\u00e9nomiques pour identifier de nouvelles souches microbiennes qui \u00e9liminent les concentrations de benz\u00e8ne. La bioaugmentation ou l\u2019injection de microbes sp\u00e9cifiques dans des sites contamin\u00e9s pourrait grandement acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer le taux de biod\u00e9gradation, ce qui m\u00e8nera au nettoyage des sites. On devrait savoir d\u2019ici un \u00e0 trois ans si ces cultures effectuent efficacement leur travail de biod\u00e9gradation, ce qui permettra ensuite de commercialiser une m\u00e9thode \u00e9conomique pour le nettoyage des sites contamin\u00e9s par les BTEX.<\/p>\n<p>S\u2019il est fructueux, ce projet cr\u00e9era la premi\u00e8re application commerciale de bioaugmentation pour la d\u00e9gradation ana\u00e9robie des BTEX, ce qui permettra un nettoyage plus r\u00e9pandu des sites contamin\u00e9s o\u00f9 les technologies actuelles ne sont pas possibles ou sont trop co\u00fbteuses. L\u2019application permettra la rem\u00e9diation des sols sur place, au lieu de les excaver et de les enlever.
