Bien qu&rsquo;elles ne constituent g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement pas une source de pr\u00e9occupation, il en va tout autrement lorsque, sous l&rsquo;effet de la chaleur (hausse des temp\u00e9ratures due aux changements climatiques), de la lumi\u00e8re ou des nutriments (provenant de rejets agricoles ou municipaux), ces algues \u00ab&nbsp;prolif\u00e8rent&nbsp;\u00bb dans les \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes aquatiques et produisent et lib\u00e8rent des cyanotoxines. Lorsqu&rsquo;elles sont ing\u00e9r\u00e9es par des humains ou des animaux, ces toxines peuvent causer des maladies, voire la mort. M\u00eame les contacts cutan\u00e9s, par exemple durant la douche ou la baignade, peuvent \u00eatre toxiques. En plus des menaces qu&rsquo;elles pr\u00e9sentent pour les humains, le b\u00e9tail, le poisson et la faune, ces prolif\u00e9rations sont extr\u00eamement co\u00fbteuses (leur co\u00fbt a \u00e9t\u00e9 estim\u00e9 \u00e0 825&nbsp;millions de dollars&nbsp;US aux \u00c9tats-Unis et \u00e0 330&nbsp;millions de dollars&nbsp;US en Australie).<\/p>\n<p>Au Canada, un nombre croissant d&rsquo;usines de traitement de l&rsquo;eau potable, dont celles aliment\u00e9es par les Grands&nbsp;Lacs qui constituent la source d&rsquo;eau potable de 8,5&nbsp;millions de Canadiens, sont aujourd&rsquo;hui consid\u00e9r\u00e9es comme \u00e9tant \u00e0 risque. Ces installations doivent utiliser des proc\u00e9d\u00e9s de traitement co\u00fbteux pour \u00e9liminer les cyanobact\u00e9ries et leurs toxines. S\u00e9bastien&nbsp;Sauv\u00e9 et Jesse&nbsp;Shapiro de l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al, en collaboration avec Sarah&nbsp;Dorner de Polytechnique Montr\u00e9al, dirigent une \u00e9quipe qui travaille \u00e0 la mise au point d&rsquo;une bo\u00eete \u00e0 outils de diagnostic utilisant la g\u00e9nomique chimique pour \u00e9valuer le risque de toxicit\u00e9 dans les sources d&rsquo;eau et guider les municipalit\u00e9s et les responsables de la qualit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;eau dans l&rsquo;adoption de strat\u00e9gies de pr\u00e9vention et de traitement. L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe cherchera \u00e9galement \u00e0 d\u00e9terminer les meilleurs proc\u00e9d\u00e9s de traitement pour pr\u00e9venir la prolif\u00e9ration des toxines dans l&rsquo;eau potable et assurer l&rsquo;\u00e9limination sans danger des boues toxiques.
