La corrosion d\u00e9truit les infrastructures, lentement, mais inexorablement. &nbsp;Selon les estimations, la corrosion co\u00fbte de trois \u00e0 sept milliards de dollars US par ann\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019industrie p\u00e9troli\u00e8re et gazi\u00e8re; la corrosion attribuable \u00e0 l\u2019activit\u00e9 microbienne ou corrosion influenc\u00e9e par les microorganismes (CIMO) en repr\u00e9sente au moins 20&nbsp;%. On ne sait pas tr\u00e8s bien comment la CIMO se produit, surtout parce qu\u2019on ne surveille environ qu\u2019un pour cent de certains groupes microbiens et que les chercheurs ont eu tendance \u00e0 \u00e9tudier la corrosion dans des disciplines isol\u00e9es, sans int\u00e9grer leurs r\u00e9sultats.<\/p>\n<p>La g\u00e9nomique permet de mieux comprendre et d\u2019examiner de fa\u00e7on plus globale les processus de CIMO dans diverses disciplines, ce qui m\u00e8nera \u00e0 une connaissance plus approfondie et \u00e0 une meilleure gestion du CIMO dans l\u2019industrie p\u00e9troli\u00e8re et gazi\u00e8re. Lisa Gieg, Ph.&nbsp;D., de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Calgary, John Wolodko, Ph.&nbsp;D., de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de l\u2019Alberta et Faisal Khan, Ph.&nbsp;D., de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Memorial, dirigent une \u00e9quipe de chercheurs sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9s en g\u00e9nomique, en \u00e9lectrochimie, en mod\u00e9lisation de la d\u00e9gradation, en \u00e9valuation des risques, en gestion et en applications pratiques pour acqu\u00e9rir des connaissances sur la CIMO qui m\u00e8neront \u00e0 la conception d\u2019appareils et d\u2019essais, \u00e0 des mod\u00e8les de d\u00e9gradation et de risques, de m\u00eame qu\u2019\u00e0 des strat\u00e9gies de gestion et des mod\u00e8les qui montreront comment, o\u00f9 et pourquoi la CIMO survient et comment le mieux l\u2019att\u00e9nuer. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>En int\u00e9grant ces r\u00e9sultats attendus en cadres et en normes de gestion de la corrosion, leur utilisation se r\u00e9pandra, ce qui m\u00e8nera \u00e0 une diminution des d\u00e9versements d\u2019hydrocarbures (en contribuant \u00e0 r\u00e9duire au minimum les fuites des pipelines, par exemple) et \u00e0 une meilleure int\u00e9grit\u00e9 des biens, s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des travailleurs et conformit\u00e9 aux normes environnementales.
