M\u00eame si l\u2019on reconna\u00eet g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement le potentiel des enzymes microbiennes d\u2019\u00e9largir la gamme des produits fabriqu\u00e9s \u00e0 partir de cette biomasse, la mise au point des biotechnologies a surtout consist\u00e9 jusqu\u2019\u00e0 maintenant \u00e0 d\u00e9construire les arbres en sucres qui peuvent ensuite \u00eatre transform\u00e9s en biocarburants, au moyen de la fermentation.<\/p>\n<p>Emma Master, Ph.&nbsp;D., de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Toronto, et Harry Brumer, Ph.&nbsp;D., de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-Britannique dirigent une \u00e9quipe qui se tourne dans une autre direction. Leur projet, SYNBIOMICS, vise \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer les biopolym\u00e8res cl\u00e9s issus des arbres \u00e0 l\u2019aide des enzymes, afin de cr\u00e9er des mat\u00e9riaux qui offriront une valeur sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 ce qui aurait pu \u00eatre obtenu autrement. Le projet mettra \u00e0 profit le potentiel g\u00e9n\u00e9tique des microorganismes de reconna\u00eetre et de d\u00e9velopper de nouveaux biocatalyseurs \u00e0 cette fin. Les utilisateurs finaux et les intervenants ont aid\u00e9 \u00e0 cibler des produits de forte valeur possible dont des r\u00e9sines, des rev\u00eatements, des bioplastiques et des adh\u00e9sifs.<\/p>\n<p>Pour faciliter la commercialisation des biocatalyseurs et des bioproc\u00e9d\u00e9s mis au point par l\u2019\u00e9quipe, celle-ci \u00e9tablira des plans pour favoriser la synergie entre les petites et moyennes entreprises et les usines de p\u00e2tes voisines.
