Les insectes ravageurs menacent continuellement la vitalit\u00e9 de ces secteurs en raison des vastes \u00e9closions et de l\u2019afflux constant de nouvelles esp\u00e8ces caus\u00e9 par les transports commerciaux d\u2019outre-mer ou des \u00c9tats-Unis. Malheureusement, le rythme auquel de nouveaux outils de surveillance et d\u2019att\u00e9nuation peuvent \u00eatre mis au point pour contrer ces ravageurs ne suffit pas. La g\u00e9nomique, en particulier la g\u00e9nomique fonctionnelle, promet depuis longtemps d\u2019offrir de nouvelles solutions aux probl\u00e8mes r\u00e9currents et nouveaux des ravageurs.<\/p>\n<p>Peter J. Krell, Ph.\u00a0D., de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Guelph, en collaboration avec MM.\u00a0Daniel Doucet, Ph.\u00a0D., et Jeremy Allison, Ph.\u00a0D.\u00a0(RNCan), dirige une \u00e9quipe qui utilise la g\u00e9nomique fonctionnelle pour appuyer la cr\u00e9ation de syst\u00e8mes de surveillance et d\u2019att\u00e9nuation tr\u00e8s sensibles qui cibleront les insectes. L\u2019\u00e9quipe caract\u00e9risera une famille de g\u00e8nes des insectes appel\u00e9e r\u00e9cepteurs olfactifs\u00a0(RO). Les RO sont des prot\u00e9ines qui lient des mol\u00e9cules odorantes volatiles qui pourraient \u00eatre utilis\u00e9es dans les programmes de surveillance et de gestion des insectes. L\u2019innovation consiste en une lign\u00e9e cellulaire d\u2019insectes cr\u00e9\u00e9e pour exprimer les g\u00e8nes des RO. De plus, la lign\u00e9e cellulaire code un g\u00e8ne rapporteur fluorescent qui r\u00e9agit \u00e0 l\u2019activation des RO par les odeurs. Ces deux caract\u00e9ristiques permettent de d\u00e9pister les RO de nombreux insectes et d\u2019identifier des centaines de compos\u00e9s odorants volatils qui n\u2019ont pas encore \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crits.<\/p>\n<p>Cette innovation devrait non seulement transformer la discipline de la g\u00e9nomique fonctionnelle, mais \u00e9galement le domaine de la gestion des ravageurs. Cette derni\u00e8re, qui engendre des co\u00fbts \u00e9normes (on pr\u00e9voit notamment qu\u2019il faudra consacrer 890\u00a0millions de dollars \u00e0 la lutte contre l\u2019agrile du fr\u00eane), serait beaucoup plus r\u00e9alisable et rapide.
