Ses trois principales cultures sont les tomates, les poivrons et les concombres, r\u00e9alis\u00e9es principalement en Ontario, en Colombie-Britannique et au Qu\u00e9bec. Dans un contexte extr\u00eamement concurrentiel, les maladies des plantes constituent un \u00e9norme fardeau pour les producteurs, car elles engendrent jusqu\u2019\u00e0 20\u00a0% de pertes dans les cultures. Les technologies g\u00e9nomiques qui permettraient d\u2019att\u00e9nuer ces pertes sont en forte demande.<\/p>\n<p>MM.\u00a0David Guttman, Darrell Desveaux et Adam Mott, Ph.\u00a0D., de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Toronto ont d\u00e9couvert une famille de g\u00e8nes qui n\u2019avait pas d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 caract\u00e9ris\u00e9e et qui conf\u00e8re aux plantes une r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 large spectre aux maladies caus\u00e9es par des bact\u00e9ries et des champignons. De plus, il est extr\u00eamement difficile pour les agents pathog\u00e8nes de surmonter la r\u00e9sistance li\u00e9e \u00e0 ces g\u00e8nes. M. Guttman et son \u00e9quipe collaborent maintenant avec le Vineland Research and Innovation Centre et sa plateforme de g\u00e9n\u00e9tique inverse (mise au point gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un financement ant\u00e9rieur de G\u00e9nome Canada) pour poursuivre le d\u00e9veloppement de ces g\u00e8nes tr\u00e8s r\u00e9sistants qui prot\u00e8gent contre de multiples agents pathog\u00e8nes, r\u00e9duisent les pertes et augmentent le rendement. Il en r\u00e9sultera de nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de l\u00e9gumes qui donneront aux producteurs canadiens un avantage sur leurs concurrents.<\/p>\n<p>Dans les cinq ans qui suivront la fin du projet, Vineland portera cette technologie g\u00e9nique de son application jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la commercialisation de nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s v\u00e9g\u00e9tales qui r\u00e9sisteront mieux aux maladies. L\u2019industrie canadienne de la culture en serre commencera alors \u00e0 accumuler des profits annuels d\u2019environ 26\u00a0millions de dollars dans le m\u00eame laps de temps. La comp\u00e9titivit\u00e9 accrue des producteurs canadiens m\u00e8nera \u00e0 une croissance soutenue, \u00e0 l\u2019expansion des activit\u00e9s et \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation de nouveaux emplois.
