Les co\u00fbts de purification li\u00e9s \u00e0 ce glyc\u00e9rol brut \u00e9tant \u00e9lev\u00e9s et la demande du march\u00e9 pour la glyc\u00e9rine raffin\u00e9e \u00e9tant faible, une grande partie du glyc\u00e9rol brut est incin\u00e9r\u00e9e, ce qui ajoute aux \u00e9missions climatiques et aux co\u00fbts de production. World Energy entend commercialiser la production de biobutanol, un biocarburant et un produit chimique sup\u00e9rieurs, \u00e0 partir de ce r\u00e9sidu de glyc\u00e9rol. Un processus a d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tabli pour la conversion de glyc\u00e9rol en butanol \u00e0 l\u2019aide de Clostridium pasteurianum; toutefois, les changements g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques qui sont survenus et la stabilit\u00e9 des nouvelles souches ne sont pas bien compris. Le but de ce projet est d\u2019am\u00e9liorer le processus de fermentation continue en acqu\u00e9rant une meilleure compr\u00e9hension des changements g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques qui sont survenus dans les souches bact\u00e9riennes fabriqu\u00e9es ainsi que d\u2019am\u00e9liorer la production de biobutanol et la tol\u00e9rance aux acides gras au moyen de modifications g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques suppl\u00e9mentaires. On pr\u00e9voit \u00e9galement une mise \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle du proc\u00e9d\u00e9. World Energy g\u00e9n\u00e8re chaque ann\u00e9e environ 66 000 tonnes m\u00e9triques de glyc\u00e9rol pouvant servir \u00e0 la production de biobutanol.
