La commercialisation de 5,41\u00a0millions de porcs dans la province est assur\u00e9e par 1\u00a0192\u00a0agriculteurs (Ontario Pork, 2018). Quelque 15\u00a0% des porcelets n\u00e9s des 300\u00a0000\u00a0truies reproductrices ne survivront pas jusqu\u2019au sevrage, 50\u00a0% (soit 650\u00a0000\u00a0porcelets) mourant \u00e0 la suite d\u2019un \u00e9crasement ou d\u2019une attaque par les truies, ce qui entra\u00eene des pertes annuelles d\u2019environ 12,9\u00a0millions de dollars pour l\u2019industrie porcine ontarienne. On estime que le stress animal et les comportements des truies qui y sont associ\u00e9s jouent un r\u00f4le important dans la survie des porcelets et dans leur croissance globale. Une r\u00e9duction de 10\u00a0% des pertes de porcelets li\u00e9es \u00e0 des \u00e9crasements ou \u00e0 des attaques de truies li\u00e9s au stress permettrait \u00e0 l\u2019industrie porcine de l\u2019Ontario d\u2019\u00e9conomiser environ 1,3\u00a0million de dollars par ann\u00e9e; cela repr\u00e9senterait \u00e9galement une am\u00e9lioration du bien-\u00eatre animal, un enjeu de plus en plus important pour la croissance et la viabilit\u00e9 de l\u2019industrie porcine. Des d\u00e9cennies de s\u00e9lection g\u00e9n\u00e9tique ax\u00e9e sur les caract\u00e9ristiques de production pourraient s\u2019\u00eatre faites au d\u00e9triment d\u2019autres caract\u00e9ristiques, comme le comportement des animaux. Dans cette proposition, nous validerons notre d\u00e9couverte de g\u00e8nes du stress chez les porcs et cernerons les variations g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques et les marqueurs ADN b\u00e9n\u00e9fiques dans le but de r\u00e9duire le stress des truies au moyen de la s\u00e9lection.
