Cela dit, lorsqu\u2019il existera des technologies applicables sur le plan \u00e9conomique pour le faire. Le p\u00e9trole, le gaz et le charbon du Canada doivent \u00eatre extraits de la mani\u00e8re la plus \u00e9cologique possible. Le pr\u00e9sent projet vise \u00e0 r\u00e9duire au minimum l\u2019impact environnemental de la production des sables bitumineux en diminuant l&rsquo;utilisation de l&rsquo;eau et l&rsquo;\u00e9mission des gaz \u00e0 effet de serre, et en am\u00e9lioration l&rsquo;extraction de gaz qui br\u00fble proprement des couches de houille.<\/p>\n<p>Nous \u00e9laborerons une base de donn\u00e9es pour d\u00e9crire et saisir le potentiel g\u00e9n\u00e9tique de microorganismes, de g\u00e8nes et de processus biologiques qui existent dans la nature, dans les communaut\u00e9s microbiennes qui vivent dans les sables bitumineux et les couches de houille. En ciblant ces g\u00e8nes, ces processus biologiques et ces bact\u00e9ries, nous comprendrons mieux comment est produit le m\u00e9thane dans les ressources en hydrocarbures et identifieront les enzymes qui interviennent dans le craquage naturel des hydrocarbures producteurs de m\u00e9thane et de dioxyde de carbone. Nous utiliserons ces bioprocessus biologiques pour r\u00e9duire l\u2019eau utilis\u00e9e et les terres perdues dans les exploitations mini\u00e8res et nous g\u00e9rerons les \u00e9missions de m\u00e9thane des bassins de d\u00e9cantation et de stockage des st\u00e9riles et des boues. Les connaissances acquises gr\u00e2ce au projet et d&rsquo;acc\u00e8s public aideront aussi d\u2019autres chercheurs \u00e0 exploiter la puissance des processus qui existent dans la biosph\u00e8re profonde du Canada pour r\u00e9soudre d\u2019autres questions de recherche importantes. En plus de la base de donn\u00e9es, l\u2019\u00e9quipe du projet cr\u00e9era des outils g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques et microbiens d\u2019acc\u00e8s public que les chercheurs pourront utiliser pour cr\u00e9er une production plus \u00e9cologique d\u2019\u00e9nergie et de mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res.<\/p>\n<p>En concevant de nouvelles biotechnologies qui r\u00e9duisent l\u2019\u00e9nergie et l\u2019eau actuellement n\u00e9cessaires \u00e0 l\u2019extraction du p\u00e9trole des sables bitumineux et en am\u00e9liorant la production de m\u00e9thane des couches de houille, le projet contribuera \u00e0 att\u00e9nuer l\u2019impact sur l\u2019environnement des besoins \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques actuels du Canada et du monde. L&rsquo;atteinte de cet objectif contribuera \u00e0 faire de la production \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique au Canada une entreprise durable sur le plan environnemental.<\/p>\n<p>(En anglais seulement.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Integrated GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS Research:<\/strong> Understanding Issues Related to Metagenomics<br \/>\n<strong>GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS Project Leader<\/strong>: Gregor Wolbring, University of Calgary<br \/>\n<u>Summary<\/u><br \/>\nThis metagenomics project aims to identify genes and bioprocesses of naturally occurring microorganisms in oil sands and coal beds that produce methane and carbon dioxide. New knowledge derived from this project will enhance our understanding of how to decrease use of water and emission of greenhouse gases, enhance extraction of clean burning gas from coal beds, and minimize the adverse environmental impact of oil sands production. This relatively new field of science brings with it new questions related to its potential impact on society.<\/p>\n<p>Metagenomics raises questions relating to: regulatory concerns about the definition and meaning of microbial species; potential environmental, health and safety risks; the application of the International Convention on Biological Diversity to this type of research; the effect of public perception; and current metagenomics patenting practices.<\/p>\n<p>Metagenomic studies will lead directly to the discovery of products or processes based on microbial metabolism that may be deployed in hydrocarbon rich environments. This raises further concerns of environmental health and safety and as well as questions of public reaction. The GE3LS component of this project will explore public conceptions around energy and investigate issues linked to this project in the areas of:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>metagenomics,<\/li>\n<li>water use,<\/li>\n<li>greenhouse gas emissions,<\/li>\n<li>bioremediation and<\/li>\n<li>manipulation of microorganisms to enhance hydrocarbon recovery.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS team will also cover patent and regulatory issues pertinent to the project.<\/p>\n<p>We aim to provide tools to the public, policy makers, regulators, the business community and researchers that help with the understanding and the management of the GE<sup>3<\/sup>LS issues related to the project.
