Project Description
Environmental pollution is a significant threat globally but efforts to reduce the risks posed by chemicals are challenged by the time and cost of toxicity testing, as well as the large number of chemicals that need data. There is a need for improved toxicity testing tools that are more efficient and affordable, less dependent on animal studies, and better able to accelerate the throughput of chemical screening. This project aims to advance the existing EcoToxChip Test System so that it can be accessible, while also being consistent and reliable for informing regulatory decisions.
The goal is, in partnership with Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Science and Technology Branch, to validate these tools for use in a range of prioritization and assessment activities under Canada’s Chemicals Management Plan. Ultimately, the project will deliver version 2 EcoToxChips for three commonly used test species (fathead minnow, rainbow trout, zebrafish) and an updated data evaluation tool (EcoToxXplorer.ca). Post-project we envision that project results will be communicated to the international regulatory community through the OECD Integrated Approaches to Testing and Assessment Case Study Project. This new made-in-Canada tool will reduce the cost and time for chemical testing as well as boost Canadian leadership in this area.
