Cancer genomics: A multidisciplinary approach to largescale high-throughput identification of genes involved in early stage cancers
Today, millions of people are living with cancer and its incidence continues to rise each year. The goal of this project is to be able to detect cancer at an early or pre-cancerous stage in order to increase the chance of long-term disease-free survival and enable the development of better preventative measures and therapies for treatment of the disease. The research concerns lung, breast, prostate, gastric and oral cancers and lymphoid and myeloid tumors. The project focuses on developing techniques to track the way cells transform into malignancies by identifying altered patterns of genes and proteins that are characteristic of the early stages of cancer.
This project also involves researchers from the Genome Sciences Centre at the BC Cancer Agency, the University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria, Vancouver General, the Fraser Valley Cancer Clinic, the Victoria Cancer Clinic and the University of Washington Medical Center.
