Dr. Kristin Baetz is Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary and an award-winning biomedical scientist specializing in functional and chemical genomics. She is a passionate advocate for advancing science through community engagement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovation.
As Dean, Dr. Baetz spearheaded the development of Get Science Done, a bold five-year strategic plan designed to elevate the Faculty of Science’s impact locally and nationally. The plan focuses on expanding research excellence, fostering inclusive and experiential learning, and strengthening connections with Calgary’s innovation ecosystem. A cornerstone of this strategy is a transformative
$450-million capital expansion that will establish the new Science District at UCalgary. This initiative includes the construction of a multidisciplinary science building and will increase capacity by 2,000 students—addressing Canada’s growing demand for STEM talent and positioning Calgary as a hub for scientific discovery and innovation.
Dr. Baetz has held numerous leadership roles, including Director of the Ottawa Institute of Systems Biology (2014–2019) and is the former president of the Canadian Society for Molecular Biosciences. She currently serves on the University of Calgary Senate and is on the board of Research Canada, a national alliance dedicated to advancing health research through collaborative advocacy. Dr. Baetz is also a council member of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
Dr. Baetz earned her PhD in Medical Genetics and Microbiology from the University of Toronto (2000) and a BSc Honours in Biochemistry from Queen’s University (1995).
