It is with profound sadness that Genome Canada acknowledges the passing of Dr. Henry Friesen, our esteemed founding Board Chair and one of the key drivers in Genome Canada’s creation. Dr. Friesen’s visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to scientific discovery, including the advancement of genomics, have left an indelible mark on our nation and the lives of millions of people around the world.
Dr. Friesen’s illustrious career was marked by groundbreaking discoveries and transformative contributions to medical research. His pioneering work in endocrinology, including the discovery of the hormone prolactin in humans, revolutionized our understanding of human physiology and led to significant advancements in treatments for infertility and growth hormone deficiencies.
Dr. Friesen played a pivotal role in establishing our organization as a catalyst for genomics research and the bio revolution in Canada. As President of the Medical Research Council, he struck a Genomics Task Force in 1997 that ultimately proposed a bold mission for Canada’s role in the emerging and disruptive science of genomics. Genome Canada was born just three years later.
As our founding Board Chair, Dr. Friesen, alongside founding CEO Martin Godbout and a determined group of Canadian scientists, laid vital groundwork for the cutting-edge biotechnology innovations of today.
This groundwork included the establishment of Canada’s unique federated model for genomics research investment and coordination, the Canadian Genomics Enterprise, comprised of Genome Canada and six regional Genome Centres. Over 25 years, this Enterprise has generated billions in scientific investment, fueling revolutionary health, environmental and economic solutions for Canada.
Dr. Friesen’s bold vision for Canadian genomics is still unfolding today and will continue to grow with every new generation of curious minds.
As a mentor and an imaginative leader, he has inspired countless researchers and scientists. His commitment to fostering collaboration and excellence in research has shaped the landscape of health research in Canada and beyond.
We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Friesen’s family, friends and colleagues. His contributions to science and humanity will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
With heartfelt gratitude and respect,
Rob Annan, CEO, Genome Canada | Elizabeth Douville, Board Chair, Genome Canada
“Today, there is still terra incognita in the maps of human knowledge. And nowhere is the exploration more exciting—or more important—than in the area of genomics. That’s why at Genome Canada we are working so hard to create a foundation on which Canadians can build and from which the world can benefit. It’s all part of opening windows and seeing things in a different way.” – Dr. Henry Friesen, 2021 Genome Canada Annual Report
