At a time of increasing global uncertainty and economic, health and environmental challenges, international genomics collaboration with key strategic partners will help Canada derive maximum impact from cutting-edge research advances.

These collaborations enable Canada’s genomics community to identify and integrate best practices that will put genomics technology to work for our communities, improving our well-being, economic productivity and resilience.

Genome Canada is proud to announce a new collaboration with Australian Genomics to strengthen the impact of genomics technologies for both countries.

“Genome Canada is thrilled to strengthen our long-standing relationship with Australia’s genomics community and our partners at Australian Genomics,” says Rob Annan, President and CEO, Genome Canada.

“Together, we are seizing a strategic opportunity to advance shared priorities in genomics, leveraging complementary strengths in AI, Indigenous health and precision health to bolster the wellbeing and prosperity of our countries.”

As part of the Team Canada Trade Mission to Australia, the two national genomics leaders signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Feb. 18, 2025 in Sydney to advance shared priorities in:

  • Indigenous genomics – supporting Indigenous communities in Canada and Australia in their engagement with genomics technologies.
  • Health care integration of genomics – to improve care and enable much-needed cost-savings.
  • Commercialization and adoption of genomics – engaging and mobilizing industry to put genomics research to work for communities.

“Given the historical, cultural and structural similarities between our nations, Canada is a natural and valued partner for Australia in health genomics. We are delighted to formalise this collaboration and look forward to a new era of partnership across these key genomic priorities,” says Tiffany Boughtwood, Managing Director, Australian Genomics.

This new partnership will deliver workshops engaging leaders and organizations across sectors, key findings and recommendations that our genomics communities will use to strengthen our impact in the areas above. This work will lay groundwork for action and longer-term partnership across both nations to take genomics research out of the lab and into communities for the benefit all.

“Canada is proud to deepen research and innovation ties with Australia through this new partnership between Genome Canada and Australian Genomics. As like-minded allies, committed to shared values of democracy, innovation and equitable access to health, our countries are strengthened by our work together,” says the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development.
