Dr. Abdallah Daar, Professor of Public Health at the University of Toronto and a Genome Canada Board member since 2012, has been appointed to a new Scientific Advisory Board of the United Nations. Dr. Daar is one of twenty-six eminent scientists appointed to the Board, representing natural, social and human sciences and engineering. The Board will provide advice on science, technology and innovation for sustainable development to the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, and to Executive Heads of UN organizations.

Some of the key objectives will be to strengthen the linkage between science and policy, and to ensure that the latest scientific findings are reflected in high-level policy discussions within the United Nations system.

“On behalf Genome Canada, I extend my sincere congratulations to Dr. Daar on this prestigious appointment,” said Dr. Pierre Meulien, President and CEO of Genome Canada. Dr. Daar is a world-leading expert on the ethical, legal and social issues of genomics and how life sciences can be applied to improve health in low and middle income countries. His contributions to the new UN Science Advisory Board are certain to make a profound impact in bridging science and policy for the benefit of the international community.”
